ABOUT THE BURSAR

The South African Cultural Observatory (SACO) was founded by the Department of Arts and Culture, with the goal of advancing research within the cultural information systems sector.

The SACO, hosted by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) and partnered with the University of Fort Hare and Rhodes University, is a national research centre which supports data collection and analysis, as well as influences policy and more,

ABOUT THE BURSARY

The SACO bursary is for Postgraduate students studying towards an Arts, Culture and Heritage qualification.

The research conducted must fall within the SACO’s scope of work, within the cultural and creative sectors/ industries.

Bursaries/ scholarships will be awarded to the following value:

  • Honours degree: R30 000
  • Research Master’s degree: R30 000 (part-time), R80 000 (full-time)
  • Coursework master’s degree: R30 000 (part-time), R80 000 (full-time)
  • Doctrate degree: R40 000 (part-time), R100 000 (full-time)

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying:

  • South African citizen
  • Achieved a minimum overall average of 65% for previous degree
  • Registered to study at a South African university in 2017
  • Will be studying in the Arts, Culture and Heritage sector (part-time or full-time)

HOW TO APPLY

You will be required to upload the following supporting documentation when applying:

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • University degree (certified copy)
  • Full academic record
  • Proof of registration/ admission letter to university
  • Confirmation letter signed by the Head of Department (for Honours students) or a supervisor (Masters/ PHD students)
  • Motivational letter briefly explaining the topic and area of focus for the proposed research (200-250 words)
