About SAPREF

SAPREF Bursaries

SAPREF, with over 50 years of experience in oil refinery business, has been a well-known company and the largest in crude oil refinery with 35% of South African capacity in Southern Africa. SAPREF refinery work started in 1960 and it includes various petroleum products, e.g. petrol, paraffin, diesel, liquid petroleum gas, aviation fuel, solvents, base oil and marine fuel oil. SAPREF has capacity design to process between 180,000-190,000 barrels of oil per day depend on what type of crude. Located in Durban, SAPREF now employs 700 people, 500 contractors and over 200 learners at the refinery to ehance the manufacturing sector. As a responsible act for the commitment on the environment, SAPREF has made policies to reduce air emissions, solid waste, effluent water and noise impact.

Available Fields of Study

SAPREF is a large company that focusing in oil refinery business therefore it provides SAPREF bursaries to encourage potential South African students to study and build careers in the related fields needed. The fields of study that will be granted by SAPREF are: Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical, Chemical and Electrical Engineering.

Qualification For Bursary

SAPREF bursaries will be granted full-time students who meet these qualifications:

  • Applicants have obtained Grade 12 exemption
  • Applicants must have been accepted or registered at a recognized South African university
  • Bursars will be required to work for SAPREF after completing studies in university
  • Applicants with external achievements or awards will be preferred
  • Applicants are not benefiting from other bursary except ones granted as merit award

SAPREF bursaries covers tuition fees, residence, books and practical work course as set by the university. Selection will be based mainly on academmic merit. Bursars will have opportunity to work at SAPREF during vacation periods. Selected students will be notified for panel interviews and tests.

Interested students can apply for SAPREF bursaries between May and August every year by writing to learnership@sapref.com and kindly attach some needed documents, e.g. valid South African ID and latest academic results.
