Opportunity Description

The Wits School of Arts is offering a new MA degree in Contemporary Curatorial Practice.

The MA degree in Contemporary Curatorial Practice degree has been developed recognising that contemporary curatorial practice has become an integral part of the work of galleries, museums, festivals, and other large and small-scale events. This is increasingly being foregrounded in the way that artists, critics, designers, filmmakers, curators and cultural practitioners think about the articulation and presentation of creative work in public. Curating has become an expanded practice that cuts across many different disciplines and fields of teaching and research, with new opportunities to articulate the wider intellectual work of curating through teaching and learning. It has become a sophisticated field that requires specialised training, as well as critical engagement, thinking and theorisation.

This degree not only considers the expanded role of public practice in different curatorial fields, but also engages with the ways in which the curatorial alters, enhances, inhibits and promotes a wide range of trans-disciplinary creative work. The purpose of the degree is to mobilise diverse practices and theories of curating to offer a space of exploration, experimentation and innovation.

Some of the courses taught in this programme include:

Exhibition Histories (HART7030A), Curating Exhibitions (WSOA7011A), Collections Management (HART7032A), Museum Education (HART7028A), Public Culture (FINA7017A), Archive, Theory and Practice (WSOA7040A), One elective of own choice.
