Sappi Southern Africa – Forests requires a Forestry Manager to provide extension services to Khulisa growers and contributors in order to ensure their sustainability and rateable fibre supply to Sappi.

This role reports in to the Senior Area Manager – Khulisa

The main responsibilities of this job are:

  • Assess & review the re-establishment program (planting & coppice regeneration) for the District, the placement of the plant order with Nurseries, and ensure that the Temporary Unplanted targets are achieved within budget constraints.
  • Inspect & assess the stocking in stands, the achievement of silvicultural standards, and evaluate risks & ensure where necessary timeous action (blanking & pest control, coppice management) is taken.
  • Ensure all operations comply with service level agreement
  • Inspect & assess crops to ensure that through the timing of operations (weed control, pest & disease management) maximum yields within cost constraints are achieved.
  • Ensure all operations comply with service level agreement
  • Ensure that all resources are ready and available  to immediately respond in the event of a fire
  • Develop & maintain relationships with neighbours & corporates within the Fire Protection Association (FPA) to enhance fire protection measures & response.
  • Ensure that company assets such as buildings, villages and company houses are maintained & managed effectively according to set standards (hygiene & legal compliance)  within budget constraints
  • Ensure that the vehicle fleet is maintained & managed according to the terms of the lease agreement, Sappi guidelines & budget
  • Ensure that relations with communities, and other internal & external stakeholders are effectively maintained & managed in order to ensure company image is upheld, risks mitigated and relationships enhanced.
  • Manage relationship with DAFF, DRDLR and local municipalities
  • Ensure that a professional relationship with contractors is maintained and ensure that quality, delivery and compliance standards as set out in the job instruction system and service level agreement are adhered to.
  • Negotiate contractor and activity rates to meet budget requirements
  • Comply with legislative and company policies & procedures
  • Ensure that Timber Control System (TCS) procedures are adhered to
  • Lead & performance manage subordinates to attain objectives
  • Provide coaching support   to  subordinates in order to facilitate realistic career paths through Personal Development Plans
  • Manage discipline & absenteeism effectively
  • Prepare the annual budget for the district.
  • Forecast & monitor monthly activity & overhead costs
  • Ensure projects remain financially viable and deliver according to business plans
  • Facilitate licensing process for afforestation
  • Ensure a pre harvest plan per compartment in collaboration with the contractor  and silviculture
  • Ensure a risk assessment per compartment in order to mitigate potential risks
  • Ensure interim inspections to monitor a
  • Ensure that stock levels are maintained to target levels
  • Ensure knowledge transfer to contractors/communities and support the development of contractor capacity
  • Ensure spot timber secured conforms to ‘Control Wood’ specifications
  • Monitor top 50 on loan account recovery
  •  Communicate with the Logistics in order to ensure optimum delivery planning is implemented
  • Scheduling of short haul & loading operations to ensure rail/road transport is released on time

The ideal candidate should have:

  • National Diploma in Forestry / Agriculture or Horticulture
  • Bachelors’ Degree in Forestry or related disciplines would be preferred
  • At least 5 years relevant experience
  • Valid code EB drivers’ license
