BANKSETA Learnerships

The transfer of skills is intrinsic to maintaining a high level of service to our stakeholders within the broader banking and inclusive banking industry. Learnerships have been identified as one of the best vehicles to build skills for both employed and unemployed based on a unique feature that a learnership is an occupationally-based learning programme that combines structured theory and practical experience and leads to a registered qualification registered by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Learnerships place emphasis on practical work exposure and need to be linked to specific occupations to ensure relevance and sustainability.

LETSEMA LEARNERSHIP

The Letsema post-matric learnership is a BANKSETA funded youth development intervention aimed at recruiting unemployed matriculants in order for them to further their studies and exposing them to the world of work. The duration of the learnership is 1 Year. Registered employers are responsible for hosting the learner(s) and making provision for training, workplace coaching and leaner support. Training is linked to the registered skills programme.

Whilst a learnership does not guarantee permanent employment, the track record of absorption of learners on the Letsema programme, into the sector, has been an impressive 75% – 85%. The success of the Letsema learnership is not only due to the generous contributions of the participating host employers, but its role in the wider economic arena. Here learners are exposed to the key role the banking sector has in shaping the social, economic and political landscape within our country. Banks are committed to transformation within South Africa and the Letsema programme is an important contributor to transformation, giving every employee in any bank the opportunity to make a difference.
