BHC School of Design (Pty) Ltd, formally Boston House College School of Design, is a private college, based in Woodstock, Cape Town, offering higher education in the Interior Design and Decorating fields. The college has been around since 1984 and is currently owned and run by Jeremy & Morgan Volkmann.

BHC School of Design, is the only registered interior design institution in Cape Town specializing entirely in Interior Design Education.

We pride ourselves on our staff; all our lecturers are practicing designers and architects, thereby keeping learners abreast of all the latest trends and technological updates in the field. It also allows our learners to have exposure to actual projects.

Dedicated studio masters are always on-hand to assist and mentor all learners throughout the developments and completion of their assessments.

COURSES

BHC School of Design offers full time accredited courses in Interior Design and Interior Decorating as well as a range of part time short courses. The following are the courses offered:

DESIGN

DIPLOMA IN INTERIOR DESIGN

BHC offers a comprehensive, accredited and SAQA registered 3 year, full time Diploma in Interior Design. The programme is designed in response to the needs of the design industry and is structured to integrate the latest industry developments into the delivery programme.

3 Years Full Time – NQF 6

360 Credits

All communication, facilitation, assessments and moderation are conducted in English

Mode of instruction includes lectures, tutorials, practical workplace training, assisted studio learning and industry outings.

Throughout the three years, students are encouraged to think creatively about developing design solutions for a variety of applications, including domestic, hospitality, commercial and retail sectors.

In first year, you will learn fundamental knowledge and skills required to prepare a design proposal. In second year, you will have the opportunity to refine your skills as well as focusing on developing your technical understanding of design projects. The aim of third year is to prepare you for the world of work by developing confidence and professionalism in yourself and your work. You will also work towards preparing a design portfolio that demonstrates your knowledge, skills and personal design style.

Subjects that are included in the programme are Practical Interior Design, Detail Design, Technical Drawing, Building Construction, Technical Services, Council Submission, Materials, History Studies, Contemporary Studies, Professional Practice, Experiential Learning as well as a variety of computer softwear modules.

Higher certificate in interior decorating

BHC offers an accredited and SAQA registered Higher Certificate Programme in Interior Decorating. The aim of this programme is to equip students with the required knowledge, skills, attitudes and values in order to contribute creatively towards the awareness of well-designed spaces as well as to enhance a client’s brief.

1 Year Full Time – NQF 5

120 Credits

All communication, facilitation, assessments and moderation are conducted in English. Mode of instruction includes lectures, tutorials, practical workplace training, assisted studio learning and industry outings

This qualification provides the student with a strong theoretical foundation in the decorating principles and elements, arrangement of furniture and accessories, conceptual development, decorative materials, styles and trends, and project administration.

The student is then required to apply this knowledge, when critically analysing the design problem, and to construct a functional and aesthetically pleasing decorating proposal for a range of commercial and domestic interiors, that is clearly communicated (both visually and verbally) and is supported by relevant and documented research.

Skills Development Programmes

BHC now offers a range of credit bearing stand-alone programmes in the fields of interior design, interior decorating and draughting. These programmes are ideal for professionals within the interior design and architecture industry who wish to develop specific knowledge or skills in order to improve their performance in the workplace. These programmes are run concurrently with the full time programmes.

Recognition of Prior Learning

If you have completed or partially completed a programme at a different design institution and would like to continue your studies with BHC, you may be eligible for RPL credits.  Contact our registrar to find out more information.

Assessments

Under the broad context of outcomes based education, BHC School of Design adopts a continuous assessment approach, which includes formal and practical assessment, appropriate for the vocational relevance of the programme. Assessment criteria are clearly set out and communicated with students and all assessments are made available for verification and appeal.

Assessment of exit level courses will be conducted internally and externally by field specialists and appropriately qualified professionals.

Tuition fees may be paid by in cash or debit order, EFT or cheque. Please note that credit card payments are not accepted. The following costs are NOT included in the tuition fee:
