Call for nominations: Chancellor of the University of Limpopo

The term of office of the Chancellor of the University of Limpopo (UL), Dr Reuel Khoza, expires on 8 November 2017.

Paragraph 7.1(c) of the UL Institutional Statute (2017) determines that the Secretary of Council (University Registrar) “must invite office bearers and structures of the University to submit nominations for the office of the Chancellor. Accordingly, members of Council, Senate, Institutional Forum, Convocation, employees and students of the University, should submit nominations in this regard to the office of the University Registrar.

Paragraph 6 of the UL Statute (2017) summarises the powers, duties and functions of the Chancellor, amongst others, as follows:

  • The Chancellor is the titular head of the University with no executive powers;
  • S/he presides at all congregations of the University and confers all degrees and awards all diplomas and certificates in the name of the University;
  • She performs such other functions as assigned to him or her by the Council; and
  • The Chancellor must at all times embody the aspirations and values of the University and actively advance the interests of the University.

From the above, the Chancellor must be a person of sufficient stature in society to fulfil the particular functions and ceremonial roles of the University.
Members of UL Council, Senate, Institutional Forum, Convocation, employees and students of the University are hereby cordially invited to submit nominations by.

  • Completing the nomination form attached;
  • Attaching the nominee’s comprehensive curriculum vitae; and
  • Attaching a statement by the nominator of not more than 350 words attesting to the suitability of the nominee for the position of Chancellor of the UL.

Nominations (including the mentioned supporting documents) must be sent to Office.Registrar@ul.ac.za or delivered at the office of the University Registrar, New Admin Building, 3rd Floor, University of Limpopo, Turfloop, Mankweng Township. Kindly note that no nomination can be accepted without the nominee’s written consent, his/her curriculum vitae and the statement by the proposer.

The nomination with the abovementioned supporting documents must reach the office of the University Registrar by the close of business on Monday, 31 July 2017.
