For the first time in the history of the event at Welkom campus, the ceremony was graced by the presence of CUT Chancellor Madam Justice Mahube Molemela and the Chairperson of Council, Mr Mike Mohohlo.

When addressing the graduates, Prof. Henk de Jager, Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal said that CUT as an engaged university is committed to improve the lives of the people and make an impact in the Lejweleputswa district. “Towards this end, we have a role to fulfil in addressing the challenges of the district through education, research, innovation, skills development, commercialization of business ideas and community engagement. We are committed to enhancing the academic projects and the growth at the Welkom campus. Five years ago, Welkom campus had just over 2000 registered students and this year, we are proud to mention that we have 3554 students registered here against the target of 3320 students by 2020.”

In his sent off message to graduates, Prof. de Jager told the recipients that a graduation is a landmark occasion in one’s life and it marks the beginning of a new phase. “Today marks the beginning of a new journey of exciting and endless possibilities. Although your road to success was never easy, do not cease to aim high in all your endeavours. As we sent you off today as CUT graduates and most importantly, as our ambassadors and proud alumni, we hope that your hunger for knowledge will bring you back to where you started and do more. Go out there and make us proud. As you celebrate your success, also prepare for the challenges that may come across as you venture through life,” he said.

He further advised them to perceive their qualifications as tools that they can use to change the world and tackle the economic challenges. “The certificate that you are holding in your hand today is not only a ticket to the good life but also a tool that you can use to change the world in your own unique way.”

In conclusion, he thanked the proud parents, relatives and friends for the support they provided to students throughout their studies. “You have made many sacrifices to see them succeed thus their achievements are yours too. CUT community is proud and pleased to share this day with you.”
