The Journalism and Audiovisual Communication Degrees are housed within this department. There is a great deal of synergy between these two qualifications and though they will continue to function as distinct degrees, students will be given the opportunity at honours level to work on joint projects which cover both disciplines. Since their inception, both degrees have striven to combine theoretical and vocational training in their course offerings and this will continue in the new department and grow even further.

​​In 2011 UJ Journalism and the BBC’s Africa Bureau in Johannesburg launched an internship programme to provide work experience for a month to 24 of UJ Journalism’s Honours and third year BA journalism students. The BBC’s Africa bureau is one of the busiest bureaus on the African continent and this is proving a highly successful partnership which brings mutual benefit to the BBC and UJ alike. BBC Bureau Chief in Johannesburg Peter Burdin says:

“I’m delighted the BBC is able to contribute to the creation of a new generation of journalists in South Africa. The UJ Interns receive hands-on experience of working in an international newsroom. In turn the Interns bring a youthful energy, original stories and new insights about South Africa and the world around them. Some students have got their pieces broadcast on air or have carried out research or produced news stories with our senior correspondents.”

The International Admissions and Welfare Office is there to ensure that all international students are provided with necessary support for the duration of their studies at the University of Johannesburg.

The International Admissions and Welfare Office is located on all four campuses and is responsible for:

• advising prospective students about programmes offered at UJ and all legal requirements;
• Assisting with compliance related issues which include study visa and medical aid requirements;
• clearing admitted international students for registration;
• providing liaison services for international students and faculties;
• liaising with all South African Missions (Embassies, High Commissions, Consulates, Trade Missions) and the South African Department of Home Affairs
• social integration through orientation and student activities
• welfare services
