How to register

You can register at any mpesa outlet for FREE.

Take your cellphone and ID book and you’ll be ready to start using mpesa instantly. 

Step 1: The assistant will help you complete a short form

Step 3: You’ll receive an SMS with the start PIN

Step 4: Dial *130*7372#, press the call button to get the mpesa startup screen, and activate your mpesa account. Change the start PIN with your own, secret personal 4-digit PIN. 

When your mpesa account is ready to use, you’ll receive an SMS confirming that your mpesa account is now active, plus an SMS with a secret word. Keep this safe and ready to use when calling Customer Care. Always use your personal PIN with mpesa.

Depositing money into your m-pesa account

Take your cellphone and money to any mpesa outlet. An assistant will deposit your money and you’ll get an SMS confirming your transaction and also your new balance. 

Sending money to another person

Sending money is simple! You can send money to any cellphone user, even if they’re not registered for mpesa, or if they are on different mobile networks.

Dial *130*7372# and press the call button to get to the mpesa menu: 

 To send Rands + Cents, use the * key as the decimal point, e.g. for R56.65 enter 56*65.

Make sure you enter the right cellphone number.

You’ll both receive an SMS confirming the transfer and your new mpesa balance. 

Registered customers

Withdrawing cash at an mpesa outlet

Get your cash at any mpesa outlet.

Check if you have enough money in your account, then dial *130*7372# from your cellphone to get the mpesa menu:  

 To withdraw Rands + Cents, use the * key as the decimal point, e.g. for R56.65 enter 56*65.

You’ll receive an SMS confirming the withdrawal and your new mpesa balance.

The assistant will give you your cash. Withdrawing cash at a Nedbank ATMStep

1: Use your mpesa cellphone to get an ATM Authorisation CodeDial *130*7372# and press the call button to get the mpesa menu: 

 You’ll receive an SMS giving you a 6-digit ATM Authorisation code and account balance. You’ll need to use this Authorisation code at any Nedbank ATM within two hours. 

Step 2: At the Nedbank ATM, follow the instructions on the screen.

Only registered mpesa customers can use this service.

1. Click on the button where the mpesa arrow points and select the Receipt option.

2. Press the mpesa Withdrawal button.

3. Enter your Vodacom cellphone number and press Confirm.

4. Enter the 6-digit ATM Authorisation code from your SMS.

5. Enter the amount you want to withdraw and press Confirm.

(Note that you must enter a whole number of Rands which the ATM can dispense based on the notes available).

6. Check that the details are correct and press Confirm. Your cash will then be dispensed. 

You’ll receive a paper receipt and SMS confirming your transaction and new account balance.

Only registered mpesa customers can use this service.

Customers who have received money, but are not registered, must go to a mpesa outlet for their cash. Remember never to share your pin and ATM Authorization code with anyone. 

Unregistered customers

 You’ll receive an SMS confirming the airtime purchase and your new mpesa balance. The cellphone you bought airtime for will be recharged automatically.

Buying airtime for another Vodacom cellphone? Simply enter the cellphone number before you enter the amount. The cellphone receiving the airtime will be sent an SMS confirming your airtime purchase.

How do I open a M-Pesa account in South Africa?

Select M-PESA menu then select Activate or Wezesha.

Enter the ‘M-PESA PIN received via SMS.

Create your own Secret PIN and confirm it.

Enter the ID number used during registration.
