Some of the funding opportunities listed in this booklet are administered by the Research Capacity Development (RCD) department located on the South Campus, Main Building, 13th Floor. However, other opportunities are administered by external bodies and students are therefore encouraged to visit the useful websites provided in this booklet.

CSIR / NMMU SCHOLARSHIP

Availability:

South African citizens.

Enrolled for full-time studies in the fields of: Information and Communication technology; Natural Resource Management; Synthetic Biology; Materials science; Textile science; Renewable energy; Battery research; Laser research; Nanotechnology.

Have attained at least 60% in previous degree (that is, an Honours degree for Master’s applicants and Master’s degree for Doctoral applicants).

Applicants must be prepared to enter into a contract with the CSIR in which the applicant undertakes to enter into employment with the CSIR for at least a period commensurate with the tenure of scholarship, provided that suitable vacancies exist within the CSIR.

DEPARTMENT OF ARTS

Applicants must have obtained a BA: Languages undergraduate degree OR must have obtained a Bachelor’s degree from any faculty, with language/ communication modules being an advantage.

Applicants must have intention of registering or be registered for any of the following postgraduate degrees (BA Honours; Research Masters).

FIRST RAND LAURIE DIPPENAAR SCHOLARSHIP

Availability

The scholarship is available to South African citizens for postgraduate study (Master’s, Doctoral and Post-doctoral), who will be studying outside South Africa for the first time, in any discipline at an internationally recognized University of their choice.

The successful candidate will have excelled academically in his or her chosen field of endeavor.

Applicants should have the potential to be a destiny changer in his or her chosen field. There is no age limit, but, preference will be given to candidates under the age of 35.

Candidates who are currently, or have been studying overseas, will not be considered for this scholarship.

The successful candidate has to return to South Africa for at least 5 years after completing his or her studies.

Annual value: R700,000 for one candidate over two years or worth R350,000 for two candidates over one year.

Other scholarships also available are the Momentum Dippenaar Scholarship (R200,000), FirstRand Assistance Bursaries (varying from R50,000 to R150,000), as well as assistance from the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust.

JOSHUA FULLARD RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP

Availability

For research Master’s studies (full- time on campus) at NMMU only.

Awarded on academic merit to a student in the Health Sciences Faculty, during their first year of Master’sregistration.

To qualify a student must have obtained a weighted average mark of 70% for Honours and completed his/her previous degree at NMMU.

MANDELA RHODES FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

Availability

For postgraduate study at a SA university or tertiary institution (Honours and Master’s degrees only)

All disciplines;

Any individual between 19 and 30 years of age;

An individual with the ability to be a destiny changer;

Individuals that reflect in their character a commitment to the four principles of Education, Reconciliation, Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship.

Annual value

Tuition and registration fees as set by the institution;

A study materials allowance as set by the Foundation;

Accommodation and meal allowances as set out by the foundation;

Personal allowance;

Economy-class travel allowance for international scholars only, from the Scholar’s home to their institution at the beginning and end of their degree programme.

NMMU HONOURS BURSARIES

Full-time registered students

Honours studies only

Bursary only awarded for one year

Must have obtained minimum 60% average in previous degree

Annual value: R10,000 (minimum or variable)

Students are advised in their interest to also apply for bursaries from external sources, as an NMMU bursary alone will not be adequate to cover all costs for the academic year.

NMMU POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP

Availability

Applications for Master’s and Doctoral studies are invited from current PGRS holders (renewals), as well as from new applicants. Any field of study.

Applicants are strongly advised in their own interest to also apply for bursaries / scholarships from outside bodies wherever feasible (e.g. NRF and MRC, etc.).

NATIONAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION (NRF)

HONOURS

Honours Bursary categories

Freestanding scholarships;

Availability

Must be registered full-time for Honours, BTech/Final year

Must have obtained at least 60% in major subject(s) in preceding academic year to qualify

Students should not have failed any major subjects taken during undergraduate study

Criteria

Scholarships awarded to South African citizens, 13% to foreign nationals (5% SADC, 4% rest of Africa, 4% outside Africa)

Scholarships may not be held concurrently with bursaries, grants, emoluments which bind recipient into service o contract- holder on completion of studies

Scholarship may also not be held concurrently with any other NRF, government funded scholarships, Science Council or Research Institute bursaries.

Beneficiaries who do not register for a Masters’ degree upon completion of studies supported by this bursary will be required to work in S.A. for at least a year after their studies.

NIHSS/SAHUDA Doctoral Scholarship

Availability:

Full-time Doctoral students in the Humanities and Social Sciences

Only South African citizens from designated groups. Preference is given to those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.

Successful completion of a Master’s degree or entering the first year of Doctoral study following an upgrade from a Master’s registration, or registered for PhD study in first year of enrolment.

Value:

R120,000 in the first year of registration

The maximum period for the award is three years.

Annual renewals are subject to proof of satisfactory progress

Successful candidates will be expected to sign a contract as regards conditions of the scholarship.

SANReN / NMMU SCHOLARSHIP

Availability

South African citizens

Enrolled for full-time studies in the field of Information and Communication Technology

Have attained at least 65% in previous degree (that is, an Honours degree for Master’s applicants and Master’s degree for Doctoral applicants)

Applicants must be prepared to work at SANReN for 6 weeks during the year (as per individual arrangements)

THE SPORT SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP

Availability

Students who are studying research master’s programmes in Soccer or Sport Science.

The output of the research must in some way benefit the development of soccer.

Availability

The Bursary is only available to women students who already hold an undergraduate degree and who’s proposed postgraduate course of study will qualify her to render some form of social service to the South African community.

Applicants who have not completed a first degree but are in their final year of study may also apply.

A student, who has been awarded a bursary the year before may apply again for one extra year.

COMPETITION

Availability

Two scholarships (one for Western art music and one for jazz/popular music) for advanced study abroad at postgraduate level. Only for applicants who have already obtained a degree or equivalent diploma in music, or who are in their final year of such a degree or equivalent diploma.
