Course Objectives

Early childhood education is an integral part of a child’s development enabling them to be prepared personally and socially for their future.  Lyceum’s Diploma in Grade R Teaching is designed to develop and enhance your teaching career whereby you will demonstrate general principals, as well as focused knowledge and skills appropriate for Grade R Teaching.

The qualification requires a depth of specialist knowledge, together with practical skills and experience in a Grade R classroom teaching context.

As part of the qualification, students are expected to gain experience by applying such knowledge and skills in the context of working with Grade R learners in a school.

With a Diploma in Grade R Teaching through Lyceum, you will be empowered with the appropriate skills and knowledge to optimise any teaching-learning situation and positively influence the future of children.  Added to this, your professional qualification will be of the required standard for academic teaching, giving you the confidence to provide the correct tutoring.

Gaining Entrance

The minimum admission requirement for a diploma is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 30% in the Language of learning and teaching (First Language), 40% for Mathematics and 60% for Mathematical Literacy of the higher education institution as certified by Umalusi, coupled with an achievement rating of 4 or better in four subjects from the designated 20-credit subject list. (Government Notice, No. 751, 11 July 2008).  In failing of complying with the Mathematics requirements, it is compulsory to enroll for the module, Introduction to Mathematics in the first academic year.  One conversational language is compulsory for all English and Afrikaans students as First Language endorsement on the NSC.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) will be acknowledged.

The minimum entry requirement therefore for the Dip (Grade R Teaching) will be a matriculation certificate with a diploma entry endorsement or equivalent. A Level 4 or 5 Certificate or Diploma in ECD may also be presented for admission and assessment pertaining to advanced credit standing (MRTEQ, 2011).

Length of Time

Three (3) years of study (part-time)

Certification

Upon successful completion of this programme, you will receive a Diploma in Grade R Teaching.

This is a higher education programme accredited by the Council of Higher Education (CHE) and registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).

Learning Material

Your study material will be supplied in a choice of formats (digital only or a combination of printed and digital format).  Prescribed textbooks are excluded and must be procured by the student.  Please see: (Terms and Conditions)

Guidelines for Assignments and Examinations

Lyceum is committed to guiding you through the submission of your assignments and ensuring that you are registered for your examinations.

Please see the following information below, to ensure your process is smooth.

Assessments consist of:

  • One assignment (formative assessment) and
  • A final examination (summative assessment) for each subject.

All assignments for the year must be submitted in order to qualify for the exams.

Please ensure all your assignments are submitted on time.  If you have missed a deadline, you may re-submit at a small cost.

Your final mark for each subject will be calculated as follows:

  • Assignment contributes 20% towards the final mark
  • Examination contributes 80% towards the final mark

If your assignment mark is low:

If you submit an assignment for a specific subject and fail, you do not have to re-submit a further assignment prior to writing the “supplementary” examination.  The assignment mark will automatically be carried over.  However if the assignment mark is low, and you wish to re-do the assignment, you may apply to the examinations section for a copy of the new assignment (at the prescribed fee) and may then re-submit the assignment on or before the new due date.
