Introduction

The Missionvale Campus is located along Johnson Road in the Missionvale area, within reach of communities such as Zwide and New Brighton. It is easily accessible on the main thoroughfare between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage, a location identified as a major growth area by the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality.

Location of the Campus

Missionvale Campus is one of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s (NMMU’s) six campuses. Located along Johnson Road in the Missionvale area, the Campus is within reach of communities such as Zwide and New Brighton (where the Red Location Museum is situated).

Missionvale Campus is easily accessible on the main thoroughfare between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage, a location identified as a major growth area by the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality with which NMMU has a memorandum of understanding.  A number of Further Education and Training (FET) colleges and high schools are also situated within the surrounding area.  Such proximity allows academic development partnerships and engagement with the FET colleges, schools and civil society.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

The academic courses offered from different faculties are at certificate, diploma and/or degree levels.  In addition, extended courses are offered as a bridge from Matric to tertiary level education for relevant students.

The following faculties offer various academic programmes at this campus:

  • Business and Economic Sciences,
  • Education,
  • Engineering, the Built Environment and Information Technology,
  • Health Sciences, and
  • Law.

Laboratory

Nursing Laboratory:

The nursing laboratory offers modern, technologically advanced equipment that enables students to integrate healthcare theory with practice. The laboratory is designed to replicate an actual hospital ward, complete with beds, and life-size instructional training manikins to practice the treatment and care of patients.

 

Library

The library is equipped with over 60 000 books and journals (including e-books and e-journals); seats 410 people; has 32 internet stations; and forms part of NNMU’s network of libraries. Traditional library systems and latest technologies in ICT merge to ensure that users have access to a variety of study materials when needed. All students and staff of NMMU, upon registering, qualify for free membership of the Library and Information Services. Training is offered to new users and staff is available to assist regular users. In line with NMMU’s core values of respecting the natural environment, this library is also one of NMMU’s environmentally-friendly buildings, specifically designed to optimize energy usage and efficiency.

 

Lecture Halls

Lecture halls originally designed to cater for large groups of students have been upgraded to accommodate new lecturing techniques involving group work.

 

Ekhaya Student Centre

The student center offers the following:

  • Student and staff catering facilities, with indoor and outdoor seating arrangements
  • Bookshop [for prescribed textbooks and stationery]
  • Art Shop
  • University shop
  • Locker space for students
  • Individual and group study areas
  • Student societies hub
  • Computer Lab [with printing and photocopying facilities]

 

Indoor Sports Centre [with gym equipment]

The MTN NMMU Indoor Sport Centre is Eastern Cape’s largest indoor venue and seats close to 4 000 people. The Centre is regularly used for both national and international sports events, youth talent shows, national music concerts, church conferences and trade exhibitions.

 

Sports Field

Lotto funding enabled the upgrade of parts of the sports field which now include a new pavilion, gate, irrigation system and four new cricket nets. The campus sports field is a popular venue for the surrounding community sporting activities.

The following services are offered to students at the Missionvale Campus:

 

  • Campus Health Clinic

The Campus Health Clinic is a service that is offered at all NMMU campuses to ensure that students and members of staff access quality healthcare services as and when needed.

 

  • Psychology Clinic

The Psychology Clinic is an established centre that provides psychological services to members of staff, the student community, as well as people from the surrounding community. The Centre is staffed by members of the Psychology Department and professionally trained postgraduate students.

 

  • Student Counseling, Career and Development Centre

Established in 2005, the Student Counseling, Career and Development Centre works to enhance student success by providing professional and personalized counseling services and programmes to registered NMMU students across all NMMU Campuses. The Centre offers a variety of services ranging from career development and employability to programmes aimed at optimizing student wellbeing.

 

  • Student Finance

The Financial Aid Team has presence at all NMMU campuses. The vision of this unit is to assist all financially needy and academically deserving students with Financial Aid. Students are encouraged to make use of this service for their financial aid needs.

 

  • Student Shuttle Services [inter-campus]

NMMU has a student shuttle service which transports students from the main campus to Missionvale campus daily.
