NMU Photography Visual Arts Degree

Our Photography visual arts degree course is aimed at candidates who intend to make a career in photography, and has a strong professional orientation. All aspects of professional photography are covered both in practice and theory, with the greater part of the time spent on practical projects, either in our well-equipped studio or on location.

Prospective undergraduate and postgraduate students who wish to join Nelson Mandela University are invited to apply during the late application period (16 August – 30 September) for a certificate, diploma or degree qualification by using our online application system.  

In order to ensure adequate time for application, processing and planning by the university and yourself, applications for late admission in should be submitted by 30 September.

Courses Offered At Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University

The three year full-time programme leads to the qualification of Bachelor of Visual Arts in Photography, with the 4th year taking the student to the Bachelor of Visual Arts Honours degree. We are also accredited to offer a Masters of Visual Arts degree in Photography.

We have a strong departmental focus on the photographic genres of fashion, advertising, portraiture, documentary, fine art and conceptual, digital illustration, landscape, automotive, industrial, and architecture. At all times creativity is king as we are portfolio driven and aim to equip students to work as practicing photographers and media producers.

The programme also covers aspects of web design, digital imaging, Photoshop, video production, book design and page layout.

Students are required to have their own DSLR camera, but the department is well equipped with equipment, lenses, as well as a wide range of lighting equipment for both studio and location use.

Applications will be considered until this date, provided that there is still space available in the course you wish to apply for, and that you meet the admission requirements directly. In addition, places in some qualifications are limited, and it is therefore in your best interest to submit your online application form and ALL supporting documentation before 30 September .
