Pre-registration year follows immediately after completion of a four years’ full-time study which leads to the awarding of a B Pharm degree. The practical period for pre-registration is a minimum of twelve months. The practical training year is of extreme importance for the pharmacy graduate. It is an opportunity for the pharmacist intern to gain practical experience and knowledge in the practice setting. This practical training period may be carried out in a community pharmacy, institutional pharmacy, manufacturing pharmacy or at a provider of a qualification in pharmacy approved by Council for such training. Pharmacists with foreign qualification may only perform practical training in Community or Institutional pharmacy.

 

During this training period, the following activities must be completed online from the secure site using your secure login details

Completion of a CPD Portfolio

Completion of Progress Reports

Application for Cession of Contract

Application to sit for the Pre-registration Examination

Confirmation of attendance of Workshop (Tutor/Intern examination)

PRE-REGISTRATION EVALUATION

 

An intern is required to successfully complete the pre-registration evaluation (CPD Portfolio + Pre-registration examination). The tutor must submit the required progress reports prior to registration as a pharmacist for the purpose of performing pharmaceutical community service. A pharmacist intern may attempt the pre-registration examination on any of the scheduled dates provided that they have completed six months of practical training.

 

An examination fee will be charged to the interns who attempt the examination more than twice. No examination fee will be charged for the first attempt of the examination. Applications to sit for the examination must be submitted online at least a month before the scheduled date of the examination. The Examination will be conducted at various centres throughout the country. Past examination papers can also be purchased from Council. After successful completion of internship, the intern may register a pharmacist for the purposes of performing community service in a public sector facility before he/she can practice independently as a pharmacist.
