UP Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme CALL FOR APPLICATIONS, 2017

The University of Pretoria annually grants postdoctoral fellowships with a view to grow and sustain an environment that supports a vibrant research, scholarship and innovation culture. In order to achieve this purpose, the University strives to attract postdoctoral fellows who have demonstrated outstanding talent in their area of research, and who would contribute to research productivity and impact.

The programme enables postdoctoral fellows to build their academic careers by participating in the University’s areas of research strength and strategic priorities. Those interested in applying for the UP Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme should consult prospective research leaders or mentors with whom they will become co-applicants.

Awards are made annually on a competitive basis.The expectation is that fellows will be active and productive researchers, and develop academically, under the mentorship of experienced academic staff. Therefore also the importance of aligning postdoctoral placements with areas of research strength, and for the University to benefit from the potential contribution of postdoctoral fellows to research output, through their assistance in research projects and in the supervision of postgraduate students.

TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits ​(closed)

The TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme provides postdoctoral researchers who have obtained their PhDs not earlier than 2012, and who are from sub-Saharan Africa (including South Africa), with the opportunity to make a ‘Cooperation Visit’ to an Institute in Germany.

  • Such visits will have a duration of no more than three months and must be undertaken within 12 months of the award.

The Australia Awards–Africa programme is offering an opportunity to develop on-going research and professional links in the areas of Science and Technology, Agricultural Productivity, and Health.

Australia Awards will pilot a number of Postdoctoral Fellowships through the Australia Africa Universities Network (AAUN). Applicants must be affiliated to a South African University that is a member of the AAUN (University of Pretoria or University of Cape Town), and engage in research activity.

NRF Freestanding, Innovation and Scarce Skills Postdoctoral Fellowships for 2018 (NOW OPEN)

The National Research Foundation (NRF), in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), is pleased to announce the call for scholarship applications for 2018 in the following categories:

  • NRF Free-standing Postdoctoral Fellowships (local and abroad);
  • Innovation Postdoctoral Fellowships; and
  • Scarce Skills Development Fund: Postdoctoral Fellowships.

Successful applicants must undertake full-time postdoctoral research.  The fellowships cannot be held concurrently with any salaried full-time employment.
