Rhodes Business School Bursaries 2017

Rhodes Business School is pleased to announce that we have secured bursary funding for TWO half-bursaries (R17,280 each) for Postgraduate Diploma in Enterprise Management (PDEM) full-time studies for the 2017 academic year, and NINE half-bursaries (R26,190 each) for Master of Business Administration (MBA) part-time studies.

Closing date for applications: 28 November 2016.

Eligibility:

Candidates who meet the requirements of the PDEM and MBA will be eligible to apply.

Candidates will be assessed on their academic record, track record of leadership and their commitment to leadership for sustainability.

PDEM candidates must have a bachelors degree and may not have majored in management or business administration. PDEM candidates must specifically articulate why they wish to be entrepreneurs and most importantly their commitment to be social entrepreneurs.

MBA candidates must have an honours degree, postgraduate diploma or four year bachelors degree (NQF8) and a minimum of three years’ work experience. Further, an acknowledgement from the candidate’s employer that they are fully supportive of the decision to read for the MBA will be required. This is extremely important as an MBA is a big undertaking and hence it is crucial that all parties understand the level of commitment required. Any candidate who does not complete the year of study, will be required to repay the bursary.

We also hope that employers will be able to enter into an employer-bursary arrangement as specified in section 10(i)(q) of the Income Tax Act. This will reduce the after-tax cost to the student by between 25% and 41%, which combined with the bursary, will make cost of the MBA in the first year, very reasonable in relative terms. In addition to the eligibility criteria shown above, MBA candidates must specifically articulate why they wish to do an MBA and how it will assist them in reaching their career aspirations.

Application Process:

Applications will be called for by public advertisement and administered by the Research Office: Postgraduate Funding of Rhodes University and the Rhodes Business School.

Applicants are requested to submit a letter of motivation (800 words) to the Director of the Rhodes Business School (email: mba@ru.ac.za) as to why they would be a potentially suitable candidate.

In addition, an academic CV, academic transcript (reflecting percentages), detailed work experience and a certified copy of an ID/passport. MBA candidates must also provide a motivation of support from their employer.

Intersecting Diasporas: Literature of the African, Latin America and South Asian Diasporas

The focus of Professor Sam Naidu’s project is the fictional crimes and related identities represented in literature of the African, Latin American and South Asian diasporas.  Drawing on current postcolonial theories of migration and diaspora, the intention of this project is to uncover the value of such imaginary constructions of transnational subjectivities and of what is deemed ‘criminal’ in an increasingly globalised world.

  • MA scholarship (two years); R90 000 per annum.
  • PhD scholarship (three years): R100 000 per annum.
  • Andrew W. Mellon funded Postdoctoral fellowship R180 000 per annum.

Masters, Doctoral and Postdoctoral Scholarships in the Scholarship of Engagement – Epistemic Justice and Transformation in the Context of Community Engaged Activities in Higher Education

Community Engagement Division, Rhodes University

Applications are invited for Masters and Doctoral scholarships, as well as Postdoctoral Fellowships, in the emerging discipline of the scholarship of engagement for students to join a transdisciplinary research project on Epistemic Justice and Transformation in the Context of Community Engaged Activities in Higher Education. Using theoretical investigations as well as quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, this project seeks to explore a philosophical grounding for the role of community engagement in higher education which hinges on the epistemological shifts which are made possible through community engagement activities.

The main research question to be addressed in this project is: can a philosophical grounding for the role of community engagement in higher education be built on the foundation of the role community engagement activities play in the epistemological transformation of higher education? What needs to be investigated is whether and how community engagement activities achieve their purported aims of ameliorating epistemic injustices for staff, students and community partners. Further, what needs to be investigated are the barriers to epistemic transformation which could be achieved through community engagement in all three target groups such that the moral and political transformational imperatives could be met through such activities.

Successful candidates for degrees will register for a full time masters or doctoral degree by thesis under the supervision by Dr. S.A Paphitis, with a co-supervisor from their chosen disciplinary field of study in consultation with Dr. Paphitis. Successful postdoctoral fellows will work alongside the team as researchers and advisors in the project.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Willingness to work in a transdisciplinary research environment.
  • Willingness to work in mutually beneficial ways with community partners.
  • Willingness to present research findings at conferences.
  • Willingness to learn new research methodologies and theoretical frameworks.
  • Ability to be registered as a full time student on campus at Rhodes University for the duration of the degree.
