Rhodes University IT

The Information and Technology Services (I&TS) Division provides the information and communication technology needs to the staff and students of Rhodes University.  We are made up of five sections each providing specialised services.he sections are as follows:

The University develops its own administrative applications internally. A team of developers customises software to assist the Deans, Departments and Management with most administration of the student and residence system. Some HR applications and subsystems are also developed. The Applications Development (AppDev) team currently uses tools within the Progress Open Edge Suite as well as C#, WebSpeed and AJAX to develop interactive windows and web applications.

The Directorate oversees the divisional budget as well as all administrative activities of the Division.  The Directorate is represented on various governance structures of the University.  The Directorate presents the strategy set by the other four sections and ensures that the University requirements are in turn understood by the sections within the Division.

The Management Information Systems (MIS) team supports the University with most outsourced applications and integration between internal and external applications. They work closely with the AppDev team to ensure that the business requirements are met.  MIS are also responsible for preparing the HEMIS information, working with the auditors in providing information and working with University Senior Management setting enrolment plans and targets. Any ad hoc data queries not catered for in a single system are processed by MIS.

The IT Operations (IT Ops) team support the building blocks of the ICT facility.  A team of dedicated Facility Technicians manage and support the data centres and HVAC requirements of the ICT network, as well as ensuring that all new builds have sufficient network capabilities for the future. A team of Telephony Specialists manage the infrastructure that supports the Switchboard functions of the University. The Networks Team plans and plots the layout of the network to ensure redundancy.  They also terminate network points across campus and debug faults in the network. A team of Systems Administrators ensure that all systems are secured, up-to-date and serve the needs of the applications they support.  They also manage the backend of fundamental tools such as email and storage.

The Service Delivery section consists of four sub-sections, all under a Manager: Service Delivery and specialist Leads within each sub-section. The Service Desk team are the first port of call for all support required from the I&TS Division. They will escalate queries that cannot be resolved quickly to a team of Support Technicians. A team of Support Specialist form the third tier of support creating a link between the Support Technicians and the Systems Administrators. There is also a dedicated team who manage and support the computer labs for student use.‌
