SASAC High-level Systems Analysis Capacity Strengthening Three Week Programme 2017
BACKGROUND
Building on the successes of the Southern African Young Scientists Summer Program (SA-YSSP), the South African National Research Foundation (NMO) and the Department of Science and Technology have decided to evolve and expand its activities to develop capacity for systems analysis in South Africa and the wider region by launching the new Southern African Systems Analysis Centre (SASAC).
One element of this initiative involves a three week capacity strengthening program to be held in South Africa at the Universities of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg) and Limpopo (Polokwane) from 20 August – 8 September 2017. Applicants from IIASA NMO countries are eligible to apply along with participants from South Africa and Southern Africa. The program aims at developing a thinking approach within a wide range of disciplines which can be applied to a system e.g. a health system, a socio-economic system, a governance system, a mathematical and social system, an ecosystem services system and an engineering system. Key to the systems approach is working across disciplines and sectors.
Applicants should be:
- Early-career supervisors, or/and
- Early-career academics, or/and
- Postdoctoral Fellows.
The call opens on 1 June until 30 June 2017. A target of 30 participants will be selected. The program will include high-level lectures and research development seminars alongside workshops covering themes in both social and natural sciences, including policy dimensions. The main goal is to broaden the participants’ perspectives on systems analysis. For participants from IIASA member countries, the South African NMO will cover accommodation and meals for the duration of the program. Candidates will need to cover their own travel costs to and from Johannesburg.
The program provides an excellent opportunity for early-career researchers in your country to develop their system analytical skills and gain international research exposure and so would like to encourage you to announce this opportunity to your communities. In addition if you are in a position to advise on possible sources of travel funding for nationals of your country, this may well help to increase the number of participants from your country in this innovative and interesting program.
