We are a department of people-centred education and therefore our priorities are to:

  • make basic education available and accessible to youths and adults, especially those in rural and disadvantaged communities.
  • provide learner centred teaching with support to equip our clients with basic knowledge and skills for job creation and self-employment
  • be involved in community engagement and research activities aimed at community development

Department of Educational Foundations

Our vision

We see ourselves actively engaged in:

  • the academic development of students using appropriate forms of communication and technology to enhance the teaching and learning experience
  • innovative scholarship in our areas of specialisation while maintaining a balance between individual and team research

  • Research which informs educational theory and practice and strengthens the quality of tuition
  • Community service in partnership with a range of constituents to effect positive change in schools and community organisations

Department of Psychology of Education

Vision

The principles espoused by the Department of Psychology of Education is rooted in the African context, and strives to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary for development on the African continent. The Department strives toward the provision of an exceptional scholarly environment to serve not only its students, but also teachers, educational psychologists and the South African public at large. The Department constantly strives toward building its reputation as provider of high quality open distance learning (ODL) by promoting relevant and innovative psycho-educational programmes to enhance the professional and academic skills of its students. The Department also initiates and conducts far-reaching community engagement projects and educational programmes for the development of informed, ethical and compassionate professionals with the ability to contribute to a society in which the democratic values of human dignity, equality and freedom is promoted and upheld in the lives of all South Africans.

  • To provide quality education, enabling teachers and educational psychologists to provide learners of all ages with holistic educational care, support and guidance.
  • To provide quality academic and career focused learning, underpinned by the principles of lifelong learning, flexibility and student-centeredness, in the field of psychology of education.
