Our Mission

The South African School of Paralegal Studies was established in 1992 to reach the broader South African community to play a vital role in the South African legal system by providing specialized paralegal training.

Our Goals

More specifically, The South African School of Paralegal Studies provides legal training for support staff of professional practices, financial institutions, corporations and those wanting to embark upon a legal career. By doing so, The South African School of Paralegal Studies also provides access to the law for those who would otherwise be unable to improve their legal skills and knowledge, thus actively promoting the notion of lifelong learning.

The South African School of Paralegal Studies encourages learning as an ongoing, lifelong experience. The paralegal training should guide learners in their every day pursuit and experiences in a wider social context.

SASPS offers students three categories of courses in Distance Learning:

1. Short Course (SC)

The six Short Courses are non-NQF Provider Programmes, which are aimed at students who want to gain legal knowledge in individual legal subjects.

Each of our six core courses (courses at a glance) is on offer to students who want to gain legal knowledge in individual legal subjects. The courses to choose from are:

  • Civil Litigation
  • Wills & Estates
  • Business Law
  • Debt Collecting
  • Criminal Law & Conveyancing
  • Property Law & Conveyancing

The South African School of Paralegal Studies Short Course non-NQF completion certificates are handed to those who pass; a pass rate of 50% is required. Re-writing is possible; conditions apply.

The entry requirement is a South African Matric or tertiary level learning through life experience for persons 23 years or older.

2. Senior Paralegal Course (SP)

The Senior Paralegal Course is a non-NQF Provider Programme, which is ideal for people already working in an environment where legal skills are advantageous or who want to enter the legal field and want to achieve a broad legal background.

This course includes all six core subjects (courses at a glance) – see also above. It is in practical terms a bundle of our six Short Courses, offered at a discount.
The course can be completed in a minimum period of 12 months as each examination/assignment is offered at least once a year; students can extend the period to 18 months on application and on certain conditions.

The South African School of Paralegal Studies Short Course non-NQF completion certificates are handed to students who pass the individual subjects, The South African School of Paralegal Studies Senior Paralegal Course non-NQF completion certificate is handed to those who pass all six subjects. The pass rate is 50% except for Business Law, where 40% has to be achieved.

3. Commercial Law Course

The Commercial Law Course is a non-NQF Provider Programme, which is ideal for people already working in an environment where legal skills are advantageous or who want to enter the legal field and want to achieve a broad legal background. This course is almost identical with the SP – see above. The only difference is in the pass rates for Business Law (50%) and Property Law & Conveyancing (40%). This differentiation is made as a student interested in Commercial Law will have to show sufficient knowledge of Business Law but needs not to be on the same level with the highly technical subject of Property Law & Conveyancing
