Stellenbosch Faculty of Education

Stellenbosch Faculty of Education

The Faculty of Education was established in 1918. It was one of the first faculties of the University of Stellenbosch and is the oldest Faculty of Education in the country.  The Faculty is made up of four departments, namely:

  • Curriculum Studies
  • Educational Psychology
  • Educational Policy Studies
  • Sports Science.

This inter-disciplinary lens allows us to approach questions of education from multiple perspectives, thus enriching the ability of our students to consider different perspectives and solutions to challenges.

A number of well-respected units are also housed in the Faculty, namely:

  • The Centre for Higher and Adult Education (CHAE) which offers postgraduate and professional programmes in adult and further learning; and
  • The Stellenbosch University Centre for Pedagogy (SUNCEP). The Centre is a combination of the former IMSTUS and CELEBOUS, and focuses on Teacher Professional Learning (TPL), School-based Interventions (SBI), and University Preparation Programmes (UPP).

Approximately 1500 students are registered in the Faculty. About 2/3 of these are studying to become teachers and about 1/3 are enrolled in Honours, Masters and Doctoral programmes.

Many local and international academics and students visit the Faculty, and, if you are not already one of them, we invite you to join us!

Language support for subject terminology

The Faculty supports you in the use of academic language and language for special purposes with MobiLex, a specialist dictionary with definitions of terms that you would use in your undergraduate studies. There are also translations of terms, as well as their meanings in Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa, compiled by lecturers in the Departement of Curriculum studies.
