NSFAS AND UCT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

As of 1 August 2016, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) opened its student-centred application model. First-time applications for financial aid, as well as funding renewal for those students who are already recipients of NSFAS funding, will be handled centrally via NSFAS. Although applicants may have applied to multiple institutions for admission to study, only one financial aid application directly to NSFAS will be required.

UCT will co-fund and be part of this new student-centred application model and all students and learners who need financial assistance should apply to NSFAS via the latter’s on-line application system www.nsfas.org.za. We do not require a separate application to determine eligibility for funding from UCT as we will receive directly from NSFAS the information we require in order to determine your eligibility for UCT funding programmes.

The University provides a well-rounded financial assistance system to those that meet the qualifying criteria for financial assistance. The Student Financial Aid website (www.uct.ac.za/apply/funding/undergraduate/financial/) provides comprehensive details on the financial assistance programmes.

Applicants who do not apply by the closing date will not be considered for funding.

BURSARIES

This handbook provides applicants and students with information on sponsors that are offering bursaries and or loan assistance. These must be applied for as indicated.

Students should regularly consult Faculty notice boards, the Careers Services and the Student Financial Aid website for information on any other sponsors who may be offering assistance. Depending on when these become available, they may not necessarily be advertised in this booklet.

SCHOLARSHIPS

There are numerous scholarships that are administered by the University each with their own special conditions. The types of scholarships available are:

1.Sundry Scholarships: Some scholarships require application. Their closing dates and conditions are publicised on notice boards in the academic and residence buildings.

2.Vice-Chancellor’s scholarships: These scholarships are across Faculties and reward academic excellence in the matriculation exam and no application is required by school leavers.

3.Achievement scholarships: These are awards based on developing partnerships with particular school groups or schools in a geographical area. Applicants from these partner schools will be considered for these scholarships should they meet the criteria. No application is required.

4.Entrance Scholarships: The University has established a number of Entrance Scholarships. These are awarded to new first year students. Each of these scholarships will have specific conditions and criteria. No application is required for these scholarships as applicants will automatically be considered should they meet the conditions of the scholarship.

5.Named Entrance Scholarships: The University has a number of named entrance scholarships. Each has specific conditions which may be certain matriculation subjects, courses of study or home town. No application is required for these scholarships as applicants will automatically be considered should they meet the conditions of the scholarship.

6.December Scholarships: The University has a number of scholarships for those who perform meritoriously in the end of year examinations at University. They range in value and in length of tenure. No application is required.

7.Sports Scholarships: The University has established a number of sports scholarships, which are available to new first year students who have represented their country at national school level. To apply, send your sports C.V. and a list of references to: The Manager, Sports and Recreation, Department of Student Affairs, University of Cape Town, Private Bag X3, Rondebosch, 7701, by 30 September of the year before you intend to study at UCT.

PROGRESS REPORTS AND RESULTS REQUIRED BY EXTERNAL SPONSORS AND SCHOLARSHIP/ BURSARY GRANTING AGENCIES

If you hold an outside award, where the sponsor requires the University to submit an academic progress report or your final results for the year, you must complete the relevant section on your Registration Form when you register each year. It is important to fill in the full name and address of the sponsor. If you are awarded an external bursary or scholarship after registration, you must advise the Student Fees Office, Kramer Law Building before mid-May of the name and address to which a progress report should be sent. It is your responsibility to ensure that your sponsor obtains your progress reports or results. If you forget, your award may not be renewed.

UCT FINANCIAL AID DONORS

The University allocates significant funds on an annual basis for bursary funding for financially needy students; however, the demand is far greater than the funds available. Over the years Jewish Community Services has undergone quite a few changes of name and areas of outreach. Yet despite this, there is no altering the fact that it is the oldest Jewish Welfare Organisation in South Africa.

AGSA Bursary

The Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) is the supreme audit institution (SAI) of South Africa. It is the only institution that, by law, has to audit and report on how the government is spending the South African taxpayers’ money. The AGSA annually produces audit reports on all government departments, public entities and municipalities.

Allen & Overy (South Africa) LLP Bursary Scheme

Who can apply? We look for students who demonstrate a consistently strong academic performance. Anglo American Platinum Bursary

We mine the materials that make modern life possible, in ways that are safer, smarter and more responsible. Anglo American Thermal Coal Bursary

Anglo Coal is a division of Anglo American Platinum Mine. They place a high mark of status on development, as well as training of their staff. Anglo is also constantly introducing modern technology to their operations as they become available.

Who can apply? South African Citizens and permanent residents. Top- performing students in Engineering (Electrical/Mechanical) Science (Geology) with an interest in mining-related disciplines and who are in their 2nd or 3rd year of studying at a South African university.

Arup Education Trust

Arup is an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services. The Arup Education Trust was established with the aim of bettering the lives of previously disadvantaged students, by funding their studies.

ASSET Bursary programme

ASSET is a Western Cape, section 21, non-profit organisation which was launched in January 2003. It previously operated under the auspices of the Cape Western Region of the SA Institute of Race Relations and has a long, proud history of serving the educational needs of disadvantaged students.

Who can apply? The following faculties students may apply: Commerce, Engineering, & Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities and Law. Only South African citizens who are resident in the Western Cape are eligible. Students who are in Grade 12 and intend studying for a first degree or diploma are eligible. Applications may be made for a University or University of Technology in the Western Cape only. Applications for private institutions or FET Colleges are not accepted. In view of large numbers of applications, only successful candidates will be notified. This will be done by the end of February.

Attorneys Fidelity Fund Bursary

The Attorneys Fidelity Fund (“the Fund”) is a statutory body established and regulated by the provisions of the Attorneys Act of 1979 (“the Act”). Its objective is to protect the public against loss as a result of the theft of trust funds by practitioners.

Who can apply? Bursaries are only awarded to 3rd and 4th year LLB students. Applicants must show financial need and academic performance.

Aurecon South African Bursary Scheme

Aurecon provide advisory, design, delivery and asset management services on projects across a range of markets, in locations worldwide. This includes digital advisory and infrastructure advisory; building design, ground engineering design and infrastructure design; programme and project management delivery; asset management and geospatial systems.

Aveng Grinaker – LTA Bursary Scheme

Aveng Grinaker-LTA is a multi- disciplinary construction and engineering group and focuses on selected infrastructure, energy, rail and mining opportunities in Africa. The company offers a comprehensive range of standalone or integrated services that cover building, civil engineering, roads, earthworks, concrete, ground engineering etc.

Who can apply? Only South African citizens. Students studying towards qualifications in construction studies and Engineering.

Chief Rabbi Israel Abrahams was a distinguished religious leader and Jewish scholar. He held the position of chief rabbi of the Cape Town Hebrew community for more than 30 years. He was also a part-time lecturer at UCT.

HCI Foundation Bursary

The HCI Foundation Bursary Programme provides financial assistance to academically deserving and financially needy students, pursuing an undergraduate degree up to Honours level in any field of study, at a public university or university of technology in South Africa. HCI Foundation bursaries are primarily for students who will be in their 1st year.

The Tim Mills Memorial Bursary is awarded to candidate(s) enrolled for any Master of Laws degree at a South African university. Each bursary application is considered on its own merit. We specifically look for candidates who have displayed academic excellence and who are in financial need.

Thuthuka Bursary Fund

The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) are an accountancy body in South Africa. Initially known as the Institute of Accountants and Auditors. Thuthuka was founded as a way to help struggling students complete their studies and reach their dreams of entering the commerce field.

Who can apply? The learner must be African or Coloured; must be a South African Citizen; must obtain at least 60% on Mathematics; must be in Grd12 intending on studying B comm. Accounting; must be financially needy and will be assessed using the NSFAS MEANS TEST to confirm financial need; must not be out of Matric/school for more than 2 years.

Tomorrow Trust Bursary Programme

Tomorrow Trust is a non-profit organisation which supports orphaned and vulnerable children throughout their educational journey. Our students are offered full bursaries together with psycho-social and academic support throughout their qualification. Holistic workshops are run each month to assist students in preparing for the world of work.

Who can apply? South African citizens who are currently pursuing their undergraduate studies. Commerce, Engineering and the Built Environment, Law, Science. Applicants must be between 18 and 25 years of age

UWP Consulting (Pty) Ltd is a majority black-owned, multi-disciplinary South African consulting engineering practice which has been active throughout southern Africa since 1972.

Who can apply? Candidates must be of Dutch extraction, or must have a field of study related to the Netherlands. Proven financial need. 2nd year onwards. Any course.

Vodacom Bursary

Vodacom is committed to addressing the ICT skills shortage in South Africa. To address this need, we provide fifty students with bursaries annually to study in fields in which there are skills shortages. Top-achieving students from disadvantaged communities are chosen to study in the ICT and engineering sectors.
