Valued Citizens Initiative is a non-governmental organisation founded in 2001 to answer the request of the Gauteng Department of Education to develop citizenship education in public schools. Driven by our constitutional values, Valued Citizens Initiative develops the character of citizens through life skills programmes for people to become responsible Valued Citizens determined to lead their lives engaging with our democracy and contributing towards South African economy. Focused on self-development, citizenship education and leadership principles in public schools from Grade 4 to Grade 12, Valued Citizens Initiative offers a holistic approach to school communities working with learners and School Management Teams, educators, parents, and social workers as the pillars of our society. Job Title: Social Worker
Job Location:  Johannesburg

Responsibilities:

  • Create an individual development plan with activities to meet social and emotional needs
  • Offer information and support to adults / youth / children and their families to enable people to lead the fullest lives possible through crime prevention/victim empowerment programmes
  • Maintain accurate records and approving written reports for legal action taken by the court
  • Liaise with stakeholders (probation officers and advocates from courts, police officers in charge of crime prevention, GDSD Supervisors of probation officers and Managers of crime prevention programmes) and making referrals to, other agencies
  • Conduct training sessions and workshops for clients, parents, beneficiaries according to the Valued Citizens Programmes
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams and meetings regarding Valued Citizens Programmes and Child Justice Forum, Case Flow Management Meetings, VEP Forums and others identified
  • Maintain accurate records and preparing reports for legal action
  • Participate in training, supervision and team meetings
  • Communicate on weekly basis with Operations Manager about needs, concerns, ideas to get programmes and organisation accredited as required
  • Conduct individual assessment of children / youth / adults as clients
  • Provide attendance registers on monthly basis and writing reports to partners when required

Requirements:

  • A generalist social work degree (BA MSW or B. Soc. Sci. Degree in Social Work)
  • Minimum of four years’ experience in the statutory process
  • Current registration with the SACSSP
  • Must have own transport or at least a driving license
  • Command of the Children’s Act and the Child Justice Act
  • Understanding of Restorative Justice processes
  • Must be Bi-lingual, English and another South African Official language
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Report writing skills
  • Must be computer literate
