Varsity College IIE Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching

The IIE Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching is an undergraduate professional qualification aimed at preparing graduates to teach children from Grades 4 to 7.
This four year Bachelor degree is structured in accordance with the Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications. It is also aligned with the new Higher Education Qualifications Framework’s (HEQF) guidelines.
The degree will equip Intermediate Phase classroom teachers with the knowledge, skills and applied competencies for employability and further specialisation study, in support of the principles of life-long learning.
This B.Ed degree provides a fundamental and comprehensive education underpinned by subject knowledge in the specialist teaching of the following subjects:
• English First and First Additional Language Teaching
• First Additional Language Teaching (In either: isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sotho or Afrikaans)
• Natural Science and Technology Teaching
• Mathematics Teaching
• Social Sciences Teaching
There is a focus on educational theory and methodology aligned with the requirements for a professionally qualified beginner teacher.

Requirement

For access to this programme, students need to meet both general and specific requirements. The general requirement includes one of the following:

  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with Degree admission with a minimum of 50% in English as a Home Language (HL)* or First Additional Language (FAL)** coupled with a minimum of 50% for 3 designated NSC subjects (this excludes Life Orientation which is a 10 credit subject); OR
  • A National Certificate (Vocational) (NC(V)) with Degree admission – A minimum of 60% in English on either First Additional Language or Home Language level,  AND Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy AND Life Orientation , with a minimum of 70% in the four vocational subjects is required;  OR
  • A Senior Certificate (SC) (with endorsement) or equivalent with a minimum of 50% in English as a Home Language (HL) or First Additional Language (FAL); OR
  • Alternatively, a Higher Certificate, an Advanced Certificate, or a 240 or 360 credit Diploma in a cognate field may also satisfy the minimum admission requirements to degree studies.

Accreditation

The IIE’s Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching is accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and is registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) as a 511-credit qualification on level 7 (SAQA ID: 97235).The IIE – accredited by The British Accreditation Council

Postgraduate Study

The IIE B.Ed in Intermediate Phase Teaching degree is accredited by the South African Council on Higher Education (CHE) and registered on the South African National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at level 7. This is the same level as other equivalent undergraduate degrees at South African universities. The opportunity to apply for a postgraduate certificate/diploma or honours degree at any South African university exists subject to specific programme entrance requirements.
