What is Vermiculite?

Vermiculite is a hydrous phyllosilicate mineral that undergoes significant expansion when heated.

Exfoliation occurs when the mineral is heated sufficiently, and commercial furnaces can routinely produce this effect. Vermiculite forms by the weathering or hydrothermal alteration of biotite or phlogopite.

How do you mix vermiculite and cement?

Water should be poured into the mixer first, after which the cement should be added and mixed thoroughly to form a uniform slurry.

The vermiculite is then added and mixed until a uniform distribution has been achieved, which normally takes place in 1½ to 2 minutes. Over-mixing should be avoided.

How long does vermiculite take to dry?
