How do I choose a winch for a 4×4?

When choosing the correct winch you should look at the total weight of your setup, this includes your vehicle as well as gear and any trailers you are to be towing.

The Engineers at Sherpa 4×4 recommend that you use a winch that is 1.5 to 2 times the loaded weight of your vehicle.

Do you need a bigger battery for a winch?

You will need enough Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) in the battery to power both your engine and winch. The battery must have the reserve capacity to supply enough power to the winch.

A 12-volt battery rated up to 650 CCA will typically be enough for a 12,000 lb. vehicle which is the general standard for winches.

What do I need to know before buying a winch?

You always want the vehicle winching to be running if possible. If your adventures often involve water and mud, look for a winch with a minimum of an IP67 rating.

An IP68 rating is even better as this denotes that the winch can be operated continuously underwater without harming it.
