The department of Mechanical Engineering is divided into the fields of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics.

The Mechanical Engineering qualification concentrates on the areas of mechanics, fluid mechanics, strength of materials and thermodynamics, while mechatronics is an inter-disciplinary field that combines traditional disciplines of electrical, electronic, mechanical, control and computer engineering skills to solve problems that bridge the boundaries between these disciplines, which requires multi-skilled students.

Mechanical Engineering as a career

In Mechanical Engineering the technician or technologist works closely with the Engineer to ensure that the engineer’s design is realised in practical terms. The main duties of the Mechanical Engineering technician will be to liaise with management and the workshop. The Mechanical Engineering course produces Technicians with knowledge of economic design, planning and production.

Mechanical Engineering technicians form a vital link in industry where designs are to be successfully implemented. They are employed by consultants, contractors and in the public sector. Due to the versatility of the Mechanical Engineering syllabus students have been placed in:

  • mining companies
  • automotive factories
  • engineering and production workshops
  • building service contractors
  • consulting engineers.

The technician could be involved in a combination of any of the following functions:

  • setting out of work on site.
  • designing and detailing of mechanical equipment
  • contract planning and supervision
  • quality control of material testing and non-destructive testing
  • drawing up of contract documents
  • drawing office supervision.

Mechatronics as a career

A mechatronic engineer is a

  • broadly skilled individual
  • willing to seek and apply knowledge from many fields
  • to design, specify, manufacture, commission, operate and maintain
  • intelligent electro-mechanical systems that perform a specified task.

ENGINEERING: MECHANICAL

ND: (National Diploma) 

Graduates will be able to integrate analytical and practical mechanical engineering techniques and mechanical engineering knowledge to solve engineering problems. They will also be able to use given criteria to assess mechanical processes and outcomes.

Purpose and Rationale of the qualification
Persons achieving this qualification will be able to, independently as well as under supervision, integrate analytical and practical engineering techniques and engineering knowledge to solve well-defined and open-ended engineering problems. They will also be able to select criteria to judge processes and outcomes. This qualification is intended for engineering practitioners in industry.

 

Career Opportunities
A graduate will be a member of a team, including engineers, designers, technologists and technicians in the design, construction, marketing, installation and maintenance of mechanical equipment.Mechanical Engineering students follow streams such as manufacturing, maintenance, design, research and development as well as complete the Government Certificate of Competency. These streams open up employment opportunities at mining companies, automotive plants, engineering and production companies, building service contractors and consulting engineers, and give students the knowledge and skills to become entrepreneurs.

The ND: Engineering: Mechanical is accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). Graduates will comply with the academic requirements for registration as a Professional Technician.

BTech: (Baccalaureus Technologiae) 

Graduates can apply mechanical engineering principles to determine appropriate ways of approaching mechanical engineering activities, as well as to establish and use criteria to assess processes and outcomes.

Purpose and Rationale of the qualification
Persons achieving this qualification will be able to independently integrate mechanical engineering principles, apply these to determine appropriate ways of approaching activities and establish and use criteria to judge processes and outcomes. This qualification is intended for engineering practitioners in industry.

 

Career Opportunities
Graduates work with engineers, designers, technologists and technicians in the design, construction, marketing, installation and maintenance of mechanical equipment. The work is intellectual, demanding the capacity to think independently and to supervise technical and administrative staff.Students follow streams such as manufacturing, maintenance, design, research and they can complete the Government Certificate of Competency (GCC). These streams prepare graduates for employment by mining companies, automotive plants, engineering and production companies, building service contractors and consulting engineers. This programme consists of course work (class attendance) and a research project and paper.

Students conduct supervised research in a specialised area of mechanical engineering and complete a dissertation.
