Fine Art
Since its beginnings in 1854, the Fine Art department has been considered as one of the most innovative places to train for making a living through creativity. Highly qualified academic and support staff as well as excellent facilities underpin a teaching programme that develops each student’s unique talents.
The programme is designed to develop your unique creative talent and understanding of the role art plays in the world through a variety of disciplines. These include:
- Drawing
- Painting Sculpture
- Print Making
- Ceramics
These courses are supplemented by modules of photography. Alongside these studio courses the study of Art Theory and Communication sets out to develop your understanding and familiarity with the traditions of art and the exciting and, at times, challenging contemporary scene. Courses in Entrpreneurial Studies and Professional Practice prepare you for entry into the world of the working artist whether as exhibiting artist, craftsperson, community art officer, gallery curator, designer or teacher. All students are provided with the opportunity to serve the community through practical community work.

ENTRANCE AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the provisions of Rule G23 the following rules shall apply:
The departmental selection panel, consisting of at least the Head of the Department of Fine Art and Jewellery Design and two members of staff, will evaluate the student’s potential to pursue a higher programme of study at the required academic level, taking into account:
- An interview in which the student motivates for study at a higher level
- The student’s results in Art Theory 3, and the Major Practical 3 subject in which they intend to specialize
- A written proposal in the B Tech format in which the student outlines their proposed area of study
Master of Technology Fine Art Entrance Requirements
ENTRANCE AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
- In addition to the provisions of Rule G24 the following rules shall apply:
- The student shall appear personally before a selection panel consisting of at least the Head of the Department of Fine Art and Jewellery Design and the chairman of the specialization subject committee.
- The student must satisfy the selection panel that he/she possesses the potential to pursue a higher programme of study at the required academic level and should have obtained above average results in the prerequisite qualification to the intended programme of study.
- The student must submit a proposed programme of work for his/her subject specialization within six months of registering for the qualification, for approval by the Faculty Research Committee and the Institutional Research Committee.
- The student’s choice of specialization must be related to the work done in the previous qualification, i.e., the student should continue to specialize further in an aspect related to a major subject of the prerequisite programme of study.
You will need to have a National Senior Certificate or its equivalent to enter the first year of study. Further to this, there is a selection process which will be guided by a set of criteria which include:- evidence of a high standard of creativity and interest in art and an adequate level of written and spoken English is required. Art as a qualifying subject will be an advantage.
You will need to come to an interview to which you should bring a portfolio of drawings comprising a still life, a portrait, a landscape and a free choice drawing. In addition, other creative work (drawings, paintings, sculpture, prints, etc) will be an advantage. At the interview you will be required to complete a short visual-comprehension test.

Students are trained in designing, manufacturing and marketing of jewellery – the basic principles for a successful career in the jewellery business. On completion of the course, graduates will have no difficulty in coping with the variety of manufacturing and designing functions, especially if they have obtained the B.Tech Degree after four years of training. A small jeweller’s workshop has only a few staff members – they work closely together as a team. This needs all-round people with good social relationships with others, able to co-operate and work with total honesty in dealing with precious materials. These jewellers design individual pieces of jewellery, manufacture the pieces and sell them to their customers. They are also responsible for the management of their business.
Jewellery factories need people specialised in different fields – designing, manufacturing, model making, casting, setting, or marketing of the products. Some small jewellery shops sell jewellery on a retail basis; they employ people for selling and repairing jewellery, also for general managerial duties.

- Personal Creative imagination, artistic, and practical skills or ability are needed. Patience, accuracy and attention to detail are important requirements. A good all-round educational background is an advantage.
- Academic: The Senior Certificate or an equivalent qualification is required. In addition, prospective Jewellery Design students are selected on the merits of a portfolio, the results of an interview as well as practical and profile tests.
