MBA Requirements In South Africa

A Master of Business Administration (M.B.A. degree) is, by definition, a general Management degree designed to educate business students in areas such as Finances, Human Resources, Marketing, Strategy, and Operations Management.

Wits Business School MBA Requirements

Entry Requirements

  • 4 year degree (NQF 8) OR 3 year degree plus PG-Dip (NQF 8)
  • Post-university work experience: A minimum of 4 years for the programme
  • Acceptable GMAT, NMAT score OR the WBS Admission Test.
  • Mathematics: A level of competence equivalent to the requirements of the SA Matriculation certificate

  • Proof of English language proficiency (for students who have not studied at tertiary level in English)

UCT GSB MBA Requirements

PROSPECTIVE UCT GSB MBA CANDIDATES NEED TO:
  • Be 25 years or older.
  • Have a minimum of three years work experience.
  • Be fluent in English. Applicants whose mother tongue is not English will be required to
    produce a TOEFL certificate to verify fluency in English. Some applicants may additionally be asked to complete the National Benchmark Test (NBT). For more information on UCT’s English Language Requirements click here.
  • Have completed either a Bachelor Honours degree or Postgraduate Diploma or a cognate Bachelor’s Degree equivalent at NQF level 8 through relevant work experience. Candidates not meeting the degree requirement can apply through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) route and submit the Portfolio of Learning (POL) assessment form. Verification of whether the qualification is equivalent to a South African degree is also required. This can be done by contacting the South African Qualifications Authority.
  • Write the GMAT. All applicants are required to write the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) and obtain an acceptable GMAT score. A GMAT score of 550 will ordinarily be required. The GSB offers a five-day GMAT Preparation Course to help students prepare for the GMAT.

In addition to the above criteria the GSB uses other indicators including essays about life experience, goals, attitudes and values, evaluations from two referees and details of work experience, educational and extramural activities.

An interview may also be required.

Regent Business School MBA Requirements

To apply for an MBA degree in SA, you will need to meet the basic minimum requirements set forth by your chosen business school. At Regent, this includes an appropriate honours/postgraduate degree or equivalent qualification, or a professional bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 480 credits. Applicants also need to be 25 years of age or older, with at least three years of real life work experience. Up to 10% of the total application percentage may however include applications from RPL students.

Unisa MBA Requirements

Admission requirements and supporting documents

  • A Bachelor’s Honours Degree or a Postgraduate Diploma, with a minimum 120 credits, OR a 480-credit Bachelor’s Degree. Please supply a copy of your transcript, indicating the symbol or percentage obtained for each module and indicating whether or not the qualification was completed.
  • Original documentary proof of at least three years’ managerial/ professional work experience.This could include a letter from your employer on an official letterhead, indicating your period of service. Alternatively a certificate of service could be provided.  Applicants operating  their own business, should submit a statement from their auditor, accountant, attorney or partner.
  • A recent Curriculum Vitae.
  • Supply a clear copy of Identity Document or Passport. A copy of driver’s licence will NOT be accepted.
  • Once the application is successful, applicants may be required to write an admissions test as part of the selection process.

University of Stellenbosch Business School MBA Requirements

Academic qualifications
The South African Council on Higher Education requires MBA applicants to have one of the following qualifications:

  • 4-year Bachelor’s degree (NQF level 8), OR
  • Honours/Postgraduate degree (NQF level 8), OR
  • 3-year Bachelor’s degree (NQF level 7) plus a postgraduate diploma (NQF level 8)

NOTE: International qualifications require a South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluation certificate to evaluate your degree according to South African standards. USB’s International Affairs Office will handle your credential evaluation free of charge. Please enquire at international@usb.ac.za.

Other requirements

  • At least 3 years of relevant full-time working experience, preferably on managerial level
  • Mathematics at NNS (Grade 12) level or equivalent is highly recommended
  • A comprehensive CV
  • 2 essays, showing your level of motivation and working experience
  • Satisfactory selection test results

UJ MBA Requirements

To be considered for the MBA you need to have:

  • A completed South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) accredited NQF 8 qualification 
  • SAQA certificate for all qualifications completed outside SA (international)
  • A minimum of four years’ work experience for the part-time programme
  • A level of mathematics literacy: NQF 04 matriculation pass in mathematics or equivalent (preferred but not essential) i.e., demonstrated mathematics literacy
  • Be proficient in English (verbally and written format)
  • Successfully complete the JBS MBA admissions assessment requirements
Admission requirements for international students:SA study permit for international applicants

International Students / Foreign Qualifications:Applicants who hold a foreign qualification need to send their qualifications to the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) for evaluation before applying to JBS. We require the SAQA certificate to verify the NQF level of your qualification.

MANCOSA MBA Requirements

Admission requirements

  • An Honours Degree or Postgraduate Diploma; or
  • A Bachelors NQF level 8 degree; and
  • Five years working experience, of which two years are in a supervisory/managerial capacity.
