SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES

Most bursary applications must be accompanied by proof of admission. We therefore encourage you to apply for admission to MBE (Housing) as early as possible. This may allow you to have a letter of admission before the bursary closing dates.

Forthcoming bursary announcements for 2018:

The National Research Foundation (NRF) bursaries for post postgraduate open in June, with a closing date of 7 July 2017. Please make sure not to miss these. See https://nrfsubmission.nrf.ac.za. The NRF is allowed only 8% of its scholarship awards in any one year to non-South African residents, therefore chances are stronger for South African citizens and permanent residents.

The Wits-TUB Urban Lab project in the School of Architecture and Planning has secured several scholarships for full time study for 2018 which are currently announced with a 30 June 2017 deadline. See https://www.wits.ac.za/archplan/postgraduate-bursaries/. These prestigious scholarships are awarded on merit and open to students from across sub-Saharan Africa.

Bursaries

As an indication of the cost, we provide the fees charged in 2017. Fees were raised 2016 by 8% but were not raised from 2015 to 2016. Fee increases for 2018, are not announced before November 2017.

In 2017 fees are as follows:

  • Tuition fee for South African citizens or permanent residents for full-time study towards the MBE Housing: approximately R50 480
  • Tuition fee for foreign students for full-time study: approximately R50 480 plus an additional foreign registration fee of
o R5 430 (SADC and beyond – including Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe).
o Full-time foreign students also have to pay a medical aid of approximately R4 020/year upfront (this was the amount for 2016)

Part time students only pay the fees for the course/s which they are registered for. In 2016, part time students are charged R30 200 for four courses. Their fees in the second year will be slightly lower, as they will only take one more course and do their research. However the annual fee increase will apply to them.

All South African students are required to pay R9 340 towards their fees at registration (Jan/Feb of the year of study). However, in 2017 exemptions could be motivated and the fee payment made at a later stage. It is not clear as yet if this will apply in 2017. In 2017 the University also introduced the option of a payment plan for students owing fees from the previous year, allowing them to register.

International students (SADC and beyond – including Botwsana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe) are required to bring to produce at registration either an official letter from their bursar, or make a payment of 75% of the full tuition fee for the year including the international registration fee of R5 430.
