ATNS Bursary Programmes

ATNS offers the following bursaries

• Aeronautical Information Management Officer (AIMO)
• Air Traffic Services Officer (ATSO)
• Air Traffic Control Office (ATCO)

The training bursary provides each bursar with an opportunity to conduct their studies at the ATNS Aviation Training Academy (ATA) in Bonaero Park.

The following is offered as part of the bursary:

• Cost of tuition for the ATS Core Content Course
• Accommodation, on a sharing basis, at a guest lodge arranged by the ATNS ATA
• Transport to and from the ATNS ATA, as per study and practical requirements
• Breakfast, lunch and dinner daily
• A monthly allowance
• 10 days of non-academic activities as determined by the study programme co-ordinators

Applicants must:

• Be a minimum of 18-years-old for commencement of the Bursary
• Have Grade 12 with Maths and English (HG D or SG C or level 4 upwards)
• Be a South African citizen
• Be medically fit

You may apply for our Bursary programs on these dates:

• 1 – 31 January – April intake
• 1 – 30 April – July intake
• 1 – 31 August – September intake

Please note: If you apply for a bursary and do not hear from ATNS 60 days after application, please consider your application unsuccessful.

The process of being recruited as a bursar student will include the following:

• You will write ability assessments
• Interview
• Medical Examination (conducted by an Aviation Medical Specialist)
• Vetting

Only if you have been successful in all these steps may you be offered a bursary contract.

There are 3 main phases of the program:

• Core Content Course – a theory based foundation course over a 21 week period
• ATS Rating Course – a practical based course the supplements your theory training
• ATS Validation – a practical module of On-the-Job-Training

The Core Content and ATS Rating courses are hosted at our ATA in Gauteng.

• The monthly allowance will apply during these courses

The ATS validation training may be done at any of our 21 Operational Units.

• During this time, the bursar receives a salary and is,
• No longer eligible for company accommodation, transport and so on.
• Medical aid and pension are not provided as benefits during this contract period.

Successful bursars may be offered permanent employment

• Upon successful validation and prior to the end of the fixed-term contract, ATNS may offer the Learner permanent employment as an Air Traffic Services, or an Aeronautical Information Management Officer
• Permanent employment will include salary and full benefits (including medical aid, pension fund, etc.)
• On acceptance of the offer, the AIMO/ATSO learner becomes a fully-fledged member of the ATNS team. He/she will be obliged to work for ATNS for one year in terms of the bursary agreement

• Learners are required to pass all of their modules, courses and examinations at 70% or above in order for the bursary to continue.
• Should a Learner not successfully complete an examination or assessment, but achieve more than 50%, he/she may be given the opportunity to rewrite or be re-assessed. Should he/she still not be successful, the bursary will be terminated.
• Learners will be working in a shift environment and must ensure that they are on time for their shifts.
• During the fixed-term contract the Learner must complete all of the necessary validations required to perform solo duties as an ATSO/AIMO.
• The Learner agrees to their performance being continually monitored during this time
