Central university Of technology Upcoming Event June 2017

Annual Art Exhibition at CUT, Creative Expressions: Shapes, Textures, Processes and Patterns

The Department of Design and Studio Art at Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) will showcase the expertise, diversity and craftsmanship embedded with the department at the University. The annual event has become a much-anticipated opportunity to view the talents of staff who are artists in their own fields.

The title of the exhibition, Creative Expressions: Shapes, Textures, Processes and Patterns, aims to accentuate the technical processes involved in visual arts production. Unravelling the different conceptual processes and visual metaphors provoked by the artwork calls attention to the fact that inside the art gallery, it is easy to forget that the artworks – which beautifully framed and lit against clean white walls- are the end products of a process involving not only creative inspiration but also plenty of physical, intellectual and logistical details.

Most of the participating artists make use of intriguing processes and techniques to address broader themes such as body politics, gender relations and haute-couture. Such themes are examined by making use of a combination of approaches which also speak to the challenge of digital versus organic process. Therefore, the title of the exhibition seems befitting, since it echoes the amalgamation of creative expressions found in the work of the participating artists.
