RAISING AWARENESS: MITS students participated in a World Cancer Day event

Students in the Medical Imaging and Therapeutic Sciences Department brightened up the day of cancer patients at two state hospitals during an event to mark World Cancer Day.

World Cancer Day takes place on February 4 every year and is aimed at raising awareness about the disease, including prevention, detection and treatment.

Clinical instructor Charne Martin and lecturer Lizel Hudson said they were impressed by the cooperation and enthusiasm of the students.

Students came up with exciting activities to help broaden patients’ knowledge about cancer and to help make the day special for them.
“They had a makeup corner, did patients’ nails and some even baked cupcakes for the patients,” said Martin.

Hudson said the students also made bookmarks for the patients and used jelly beans and balloons in different colours to help educate patients about the different cancers.
“We linked the colour to the type of cancer. Many people know the pink ribbon for breast cancer but don’t know the rest so it was a good educational exercise.”

Posters with information on the range of cancers and the signs to look out for were also put up.
A breast cancer awareness event is also being planned for October.
