On 18 September 2017, the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology hosted its 19th annual High School Quiz Whizz Competition to promote and emphasise the importance of science, technology and environment fields among high school learners. The competition is also an effort to encourage young South Africans to take an interest in STEM subjects at a younger age, as they have to become the foundation within industries and the corporate world.

This year only three schools entered the competition and qualified for the finals. Participating schools were Christian Brother’s College, Hoërskool Sentraal, and Sand du Plessis High School.

For the first time in the competition, Sand du Plessis High School took the cup and won R45 000 worth of bursaries, trophies, and certificates. Hoërskool Sentraal took 2nd place and won R30 000 for their school while Christian Brother’s College placed 3rd and took home R22 500. All three-finalist schools will share study bursaries for 2018 academic year to the tune of R97 500 from the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.
