Employment Opportunity : Senior Forester: Harvesting

Status: Permanent
Location: Uitsoek Plantation
Grade: C5
Reporting line: Plantation Manager

Role Mandate: To manage harvesting, thinning operations, roads maintenance and all timber transport as per operational requirements.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage monthly volumes by coordinating with Marketing and plan to meet targets
  • Perform operational planning daily
  • Give input or advise on transport of logs to mills
  • Prepare Annual Plan of Operations (APO), tactical and operational plans
  • Plan for season (Summer/Winter) and system to be used i.e. Ground or Cable system
  • Plan for transport and road planning for all weather timber delivery
  • Set targets for volumes
  • Consolidate field information on PSION (data device)
  • Interpret information for progress purposes
  • Manage thinning operations
  • Control road maintenance
  • Ensure constant timber supply by planning ahead
  • Identify CAPEX needs, monitor sectional budget and consolidate budget for the section
  • Monitor monthly reports and identify any deviations and obtain quotes and prepare requisitions
  • Manage fuel consumption of vehicles under area of control
  • Manage assets to ensure proper utilization and maintenance thereof
  • Maintain and utilise growing stock
  • Manage vehicle maintenance and equipment and ensure preventative maintenance is performed
  • Ensure correct utilisation of equipment by teams and extract data from IMS for daily operations
  • Ensure adherence to health and safety standards by teams
  • Adhere to sound environmental practices and manage firefighting operations and practices
  • Monitor Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage
  • Organise and chair safety meetings and ensure toolbox talks
  • Organise Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) awareness initiatives and input all incident onto DMS (data system)
  • Liaise with neighbours and suppliers on a regular basis regarding fire management and stock
  • Build relationship with the community regarding firewood, sand mining, fire prevention and illegal activities
  • Liaise with neighbours and suppliers on a regular basis regarding fire management and stock
  • Liaise with internal support functions to ensure cooperation within the business

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12
  • 3 year National Diploma in Forestry (B-Tech Degree in forestry will be advantageous)
  • 5 years’ experience as a Forester in Harvesting
  • 3 years’ experience in logistics and transport will be an advantage
  • Valid driver’s licence
