Future Students

LetabaFET College serves the needs of the Limpopo area by providing affordable, lifelong, quality education and training in line with the social and economic needs of the community. We at LetabaFET College understands that South-Africa with its different sectors needs employers and employees with above-average skills and that is why our programmes are intended to directly respond to the priority skills demands of the Limpopo as well as South African economy. Our qualifications are designed to provide both the theory and practical experience related to a particular vocational field. This ensures access to work opportunities in a work environment or sector relevant to the students’ vocational specialisation.

Educational offerings

Full-time programmes

A full-time course entails that students must attend classes during the week at campus. Times for classes differ from course to course and timetables are available for students from February of each year. Two full time programme streams are offered for both pre- and post matrics namely:

1) National Certificates (N4-N6) (Post matric)

A variety of National Certificate programmes are offered by LetabaFET College in the following fields: Generic Management Programmes, Assistant Management Programmes, Engineering Studies, Building Construction Studies and Finance, Economic and Accounting Studies.

2) National Certificate (Vocational) programmes (Level 2 -4) (Pre matric)

The variety of National Certificate (Vocational) (NCV) programmes offered are intended to directly respond to the priority skills demands of the South African economy. These qualifications are designed to provide both the theory and practical experience related to a particular vocational field. Students are advised to complete all three levels of training before they seek employment. National Certificates (Levels 2, 3 and 4) are offered in the following fields: Civil Engineering and Building Construction; Engineering and Related Design; Electrical Infrastructure Construction; Finance, Economics and Accounting; Marketing; Office Administration; Hospitality; Primary Agriculture; Tourism; Information Technology and Computer Science and Safety in Society. Students will have the following options after they have completed a three-year NCV Qualification: Access work opportunities in a work environment or sector relevant to his/her vocational specialisation (such as a bank/insurance company after completing the Finance, Economics & Accounting programme); Access the workplace with the occupational specialisation he/she might have opted for through the fourth subject option (such as Motor mechanics after opting for Automotive Repair and Maintenance); Pursue further training at the same/horizontal level; and Go into self employment. Further his/her studies at any Higher Education Institution on the condition that the minimum entry requirements of that institution are met.

Part-time programmes

A part-time course entails that students can work or study full-time while attending the various classes in the evenings. A variety of part-time programmes are also offered at all LetabaFET College campuses, providing adult learners and employed people with the opportunity to obtain a formal qualification, further their studies or do an enrichment course.

Learnerships

A learnership is a programme that combines work-based experience with structured learning thus combining theory with practice. Extensive skills training (plastering, bricklaying and painting) in various disciplines take place at LetabaFET College Giyani Campus.

Current students

Work exposure for Letaba FET College students.

Everyday South African employers are challenged with a shortage of enough qualified and experienced employees. Students at FET colleges are good future source of such employees. These students can be tried for free by companies and at the same time help to develop their skills by offering them a short period of work experience or exposure.

As Work Placement Coordinators our assignment is to place students who registered for National Certificates (Vocational), National Diplomas with employers for a period of Workplace-Based Experience (WBE) which could be in the form of job shadowing or In-service training.

Our goal is to place students and lecturers without industry exposure for between five to ten days consecutive days in each year of study for job shadowing and 18 months for In-service training for the National Diploma courses.

During the placements, employers are asked to orientate students to their companies and allow them to work alongside employees doing jobs related to the students’ field of study. These students will also be monitored by their lecturers and college coordinators. Logbooks will be completed to assist them to have track records of their experience.

For many young people who will obtain this kind of experience it will be life transforming to them. They will be able to develop a better understanding of their chosen career and how it is practised in the workplace.

This will motivate them to study harder and succeed in their studies. Many of them will want to forge relationship with employers that will lead them to secure immediate job offers after graduation.

Employers will benefit too. Students are source of future employees that you get to know before hiring. By hosting students, employers get a chance to influence the training that the college provides and slant it more towards the needs of their industries. Employers can also get points on their company’s BBEE scorecard.

Should a company be willing to host two or more of our students we would gladly assist by facilitating the placement process.

Job shadowing placement for National Certificate (Vocational) occurs during June/July vacation period. In service work placement for National Diploma students are scheduled for July and December.

These experiential training are aligned with the department of Higher Education and Training requirements.

There is no financial or compensation expected from the host employer. The only cost of the host is their supervision time during their time in the company.

We hope that more companies will join us in this important exercise. Companies are invited to contact us to explore how placing our students can grow their business and bottom line.

For more information on work placement at the college please feel free to contact Mrs Ludik at ludikr@letabafet.co.za or Mr Mohale at mohalet@letabafet.co.za or call 015 307 5440 fax 015 307 2204.
