VACANCY: RESEARCHER/JUNIOR RESEARCHER – ISINDEBELE

Purpose of the position: To do research in the domain of digital humanities and/or language technologies that pertain to the assessment and validation of text and speech corpora relating to the official African languages of South Africa. This also includes resource development and annotation of these languages. Research will take place within a team environment, gradually growing expertise for individual research. Limited teaching responsibilities within the domain of isiNdebele may be required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS…

  • An honours or master’s degree in isiNdebele
  • Two years’ experience in teaching at secondary-education or tertiary-education level, and/or
  • Two years’ experience in research or research support

Other competencies:

  • Knowledge of methodologies applied in linguistic or literary studies
  • Computer literacy in at least the MS Office suite
  • The ability to use software applicable to the domain of digital humanities
  • The ability to produce academic papers
  • The ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • The ability to effectively liaise and communicate with the public, students and colleagues at various levels and from diverse backgrounds

Recommendation:

  • A doctorate in one of the official African languages of South Africa obtained within the last five years
