Pretoria Boys High School Application/ Admissions 2018

 GAUTENG DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ADMISSION PROCEDURE FOR GRADE 8’S 2018:

Following communication from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), we can confirm that online applications for Grade 8 2018 learner admission will open on Tuesday 2 May 2017 and close on Monday 12 June 2017. The application process will be as follows:

1. From 8:00am on Tuesday 2 May 2017, go to the GDE Admissions website (www.gdeadmissions.gov.za) and register AND apply at your closest school, and/or your school of choice.
2. You will receive an application reference number from the online system. Print confirmation of your application, including the reference number.
3. Collect a Supplementary Application Form from our reception (these will only be available from 8:00am on Tuesday 2 May).
4. Submit all supporting documents to all school you have applied at, on or before 12 June 2017. The following documents are required:
   • Printout of your GDE reference number as confirmation of your online application.
   • The completed Supplementary Application Form.
   • Copies of both biological parents’ ID documents (death certificate if parent is deceased).
   • A copy of your son’s UNABRIDGED (full) birth certificate which reflects both biological parents details on it. (this may take 6-8 weeks from Home Affairs – please apply timeously. You may submit the receipt along with the application as well as his current birth certificate).
   • A copy of your son’s final Grade 6 report and Term 1 Grade 7 report.
   • Proof of permanent residential address which shall be in the form of a utilities bill or a lease agreement (for a minimum period of 12 months) in the name of the parent or legal guardian of the applicant.
   • Immigrants must also submit copies of official permanent residence and study permit documents; diplomats to submit copies of passports and diplomatic identities.

You will receive an email from the school between 24^th and 28^th July advising if your application was successful or unsuccessful. Successful applicants will also receive an automated SMS from the GDE indicating their offer of placement.

You will need to accept or reject placement offers on the GDE website between the 1^st and 10^th of August.

Since this is an external GDE system, all queries must be directed to the GDE Helpline 0800 000 789, and NOT to the school.

Based inter alia on the number of educators, the school’s facilities and the choice of subjects offered at the school, the school shall admit no more than 1550 students at any time. Grade 8 classes shall be no bigger than 30 students per class.

The language of instruction at the school shall be English with the obvious exception of other languages offered as additional languages. It is in the best interests of the pupil that they are able to cope in an English medium environment.

Priority will be given to pupils whose parents/legal guardians (as recognised by SA law):

• comply in full with the Admission Procedure, submitting all documentation on time, and
• who permanently reside in the area for which the School is the nearest suitable school.

If space permits, following the application of these criteria, preference will be given to pupils who:

• have specialised skills or talents that the school has the potential to develop, or
• who have strong academic ability to be able to cope with the high standards expected at the school, or
• are able to cope in a traditional boys school environment.

Preference will also be given to those who:

• have siblings who are either at the school or who are Old Boys of the school, or
• have a father who is an Old Boy of the school.

• APPLICATION DOCUMENTS

  The School Governing Body has resolved that the Headmaster will administer and decide on admission in accordance with the SGB admissions policy.

  The Supplementary Dayboy Application Form must be completed in full and signed.

  All Supplementary Dayboy Application Forms for dayboys for Grade 8 must be collected from the school and can be handed in from 2 May 2017, but must reach the Admissions Secretary by 12  June 2017. Applications are not permitted prior to this date.

  Applications for other Grades shall reach the Admissions Secretary by the end of the third school term of each year (for admission to the School for the following year). Admission to Grades 9 – 12 shall only be considered should there be available space and if the applicant fulfils the requirements of the Admissions Policy which has been approved by the School Governing Body.

  Residential address should be that of the parent or legal guardian. If the guardian is not the biological parent, proof of legal guardianship (as recognised by SA law), including a commitment to pay school fees, must accompany the application. The applicant must permanently reside at that address.

  PLEASE NOTE THAT APPLICATION DOCUMENTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE ON THIS WEBSITE AND CAN ONLY BE OBTAINED IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS:

  Boarder applicants: documentation may, on request to the Admissions Secretary, be obtained via email to admissions@boyshigh.com.

  Day scholar applicants: documentation may be collected from the reception room in main building between 07h30 and 15h00, Monday to Friday during school terms.

  ADMISSION PROCEDURE – BOARDERS

  The School Governing Body has resolved that the Headmaster will administer and decide on admission in accordance with the SGB admissions policy.

  All Application Forms must be completed in full, signed and accompanied by:

  • Copies of both biological parents’ ID documents
  • A copy of the applicant’s unabridged Birth Certificate
  • A copy of the applicant’s most recent school report
  • Copies of both biological parents’ salary slips (not more than three months old)

  All applications for Boarding for Grade 8 can be handed in from the start of the year but must reach the Admissions Secretary by the end of April of the year preceding the year of application. Applications are not processed prior to this time.

  Applications for other Grades shall reach the Admissions Secretary by the end of the third school term of each year (for admission to the School for the following year). Admission to Grades 9 – 12 shall only be considered should there be available space in the school and boarding and if the applicant fulfils the requirements of the Admissions Policy which has been approved by the School Governing Body.

  If the guardian is not the biological parent, proof of legal guardianship (as recognised by SA law), including a commitment to pay school fees, must accompany the application.

  All Boarding applicants will be contacted, in writing, by the end of the second school term, as to whether their application for the following year has been successful or not.

  ADMISSION POLICY – BOARDERS

  Based inter alia on the number of Educators, the School’s facilities and the choice of subjects offered at the school, the School shall admit no more than 1550 students at any time. Grade 8 classes shall be no bigger than 30 students per class.

  The School shall further admit a maximum of 69 Boarders in each Grade to its Boarding Establishments. A student who has been accepted into Boarding is automatically accepted into the School and forms part of the total number of students mentioned above.

  The Language of Instruction at the School is English with the obvious exception of other languages offered as Additional Languages. It is in the best interests of the student that they are able to cope in an English medium environment.

  Not all boarding applicants will be interviewed. Only those applicants who are being considered, based on their application form, will be interviewed by the Headmaster or his designate. Not all applicants who are interviewed will be accepted and we will accept the best sixty-nine candidates based on the criteria below.

  Priority will be given to students whose parents/legal guardians (as recognised by SA law) comply in full with the Admission Procedure, submitting all documentation on time.

  Preference will be given to students who:

  • who have strong academic ability to be able to cope with the high standards expected at the School, or
  • are able to cope in a traditional boys boarding school environment, as identified in the interview.

  Preference will also be given to those who:

  • have siblings who are either at the School or who are Old Boys of the School, or
  • have a father who is an Old Boy of the school.
