The Order is to be awarded to South Africans for excellence and exceptional achievement
The Order can be awarded in three classes:
- Class 1 – The Platinum Order of Mapugubwe
- Class 2 – The Gold Order of Mapungubwe
- Class 3 – The Bronze Order of Mapungubwe
