UJ climbs in QS BRICS University Rankings

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has been ranked 58th in the BRICS region in this year’s 2018 edition, climbing five places from a rank of 63 attained in last year’s 2017 edition. UJ remains steady at fifth position in South Africa.

This year (2018 edition), the QS BRICS list has been expanded to include the Top 300, up from the Top 250 ranked in the 2017 edition.

UJ performed among the Top 16% of ranked BRICS universities in the 2018 QS BRICS Region University Rankings. Considering that there are approximately 9 000 BRICS institutions (according to QS – based on Webometrics data), UJ is therefore in the Top 1% of all universities in the BRICS region.

UJ and the University of Pretoria (UP) were the only two South African universities that climbed in the rankings , with a rise in the BRICS rank of 5 (from 63^rd to 58^th) and 11 (from 49^th to 38^th) places, respectively. These were UJ’s and UP’s highest ranks attained since the inception of the BRICS rankings in 2013.

UJ excelled in the following areas:

International Faculty: with a near perfect score of 99.8 derived from a percentage of international faculty of 22.5% (which is well above the regional average of 5.5%) and ranked tenth regionally and third nationally, this is UJ’s strongest QS BRICS rankings indicator.
International Students: with a score of 87.8 derived from a percentage of international students of 11.5% (which is well above the regional average of 4.7%) and ranked 37th regionally and third nationally, this is one of UJ’s stronger suits in the BRICS rankings.
Employer Reputation: with a score of 79.6 and ranked 32nd regionally and fifth nationally, this is one of UJ’s stronger suits in the BRICS rankings.

The QS BRICS University Rankings 2018 feature 300 top universities from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
