University of Stellenbosch Ad Hoc Bursaries and Scholarships

Chemnitz University of Technology research visits 

Chemnitz University of Technology has successfully applied for third-party-funding of a project called “InProTUC” (short from for “Doing your doctorate at Chemnitz University of Technology”) which offers the opportunity for PhD-students from international partner universities to apply for a scholarship for a research visit at Chemnitz University of Technology, as well as for prospective PhD-students from partner universities for insight visits at our university.

Funding 

The new funding instruments sustainably improve the general conditions for international doctoral candidates (incoming) at TU Chemnitz and allow a better international qualification and network for doctoral candidates of TU Chemnitz (outgoing). In order to achieve this goal, the following instruments are offered:

  • Scholarships for doctoral candidates of TU Chemnitz (outgoing) for participating in international conferences and conducting a research visit abroad
  • Scholarships for international graduates and doctoral candidates (incoming) to realise insight visits and research visits at TU Chemnitz
  • Support of preparatory meetings in order to foster the internationalisation of TU Chemnitz

The scholarships consist of a country-specific travel allowance and a subsistence allowance according to the regulations of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). In addition to the above mentioned instruments, a mentoring programme will be launched. The programme will improve the integration of international doctoral candidates and foster the welcome culture at TU Chemnitz.

The project is promoted by the German Academic Exchange Service and funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF). The project is located at the Centre for Young Scientists and realised in cooperation with the International Office of TU Chemnitz.

 Research visits

The research and insight visits have to take place between 1 March 2017 and 31 August 2017. They are funded with a travel allowance and a subsistence allowance according the regulations of the German Academic Exchange Service. How to apply

Before applying for funding, please find a supervisor at Chemnitz University of Technology willing to host and supervise you while being in Chemnitz. Applications have to be submitted together with the confirmation of a supervisor at Chemnitz University of Technology on or before 31 January 2017 electronically as one pdf-file via email to Ms. Antje Pfeifer (antje.pfeifer@zfwn.tu-chemnitz.de). For getting information about the professorships and their research focus points in order to apply for supervision of your stay:

  • go to the homepage of Chemnitz University of Technology
  • choose the respective faculty (“Faculty”-button right hand of the university logo)
  • and then choose “professorships” on faculty website.

Graduates from international partner universities of Chemnitz University of Technology who are taking into consideration to do a doctorate at Chemnitz University of Technology are entitled to apply for funding of a contact/information visit at Chemnitz in order to get to know the prospective supervisor and the facilities. These so-called “insight visits” are fundable up to one month.

The application deadline is Tuesday, 31 January 2017.

Chinese government scholarship for the 2017/18 academic year

The Department of Higher Education and Training is calling on postgraduate students interested in applying for the 2017 Chinese Government Scholarship to apply to a Chinese university of their choice NOW.

Only those accepted at a Chinese university for programmes commencing in September 2017 will be eligible for this scholarship. Please note that gaining admission to a Chinese university does not guarantee that you will be awarded a scholarship.

The application process for the scholarship will commence in early January 2017, and further details will be available then. Interested candidates are encouraged to undertake research and apply NOW to their university of choice.

Have admission to an eligible Chinese University.

Application process

The application process is in TWO FOLD. Students MUST apply directly at their university of choice for admission, and have unconditional acceptance. The scholarship application process is not yet open. Interested candidates are encouraged to begin the process of applying to their university of choice in the meantime.

French Embassy scholarship programme

The Embassy of France invites students who wish to continue their tertiary education at Masters Level in France to apply for its bursary programme for the academic year September 2017-2018.

This programme forms part of the commitment between France and South Africa to establish fruitful partnerships between their universities while building a vast network of academic and professional contacts.

Students can either apply for the first year of a Master’s degree (M1) or, if they have an honours degree, the university may admit the student into the second year of a Master’s degree (M2) in order to complete their degree after one year. The duration of the grant is therefore one year, once renewable should a student originally admitted in M1 continue with the M2 programme.

Applications deadline:
24 March 2017.
Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by mid-April 2017. Interviews will be held in April 2017 in Pretoria (students unable to attend in person will be interviewed either telephonically or via video-conference).

Terms and conditions

Students must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree. The duration of the bursary is one year, once renewable should the student continue with the Master 2 programme. Full bursary includes visa expenses, round-trip flight tickets, social and medical insurance, tuition fees (up to a limited amount) and a monthly stipend for living expenses (partial funding may also be granted).

PhD Research Grants

The French Embassy also offers PhD scholarships. The applications for PhD research grants is open permanently.

The French Embassy of South Africa bursary programme is currently proposing grants for 2017 to facilitate international academic and scientific mobility for researchers towards French institutions of higher education.

The programme offers the opportunity to doctoral students to integrate into establishments in France for specified periods of time in order to participate in a collaborative research project as part of their doctoral thesis programme.

Terms and conditions

Candidates must hold a Master’s degree or its equivalent. The duration of the bursary is 3 – 6 months per year, with an option of renewing it for the next 2 years. The bursary includes visa expenses, round-trip flight tickets, social and medical insurance and a monthly stipend for living expenses.

There is no deadline for applications, and students are invited to apply throughout the year. It is however advised that students apply early in the year due to limited available funding.

Hungarian Government Scholarship

The Hungarian Government is offering the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme to students interested in studying at Hungarian higher education institutions for the academic year beginning in September 2017.

The Programme is managed by Tempus Public Foundation. The core mission of the programme is to increase the number of foreign students in Hungary and to encourage Hungarian higher education institutions to attract top foreign students; currently almost 50 sending partners are engaged in the programme.

Stipendium Hungaricum scholarships are available for bachelor, master, one-tier master, doctoral and non-degree programmes (preparatory and specialisation courses). Both full time and part time study modes are available in case of bachelor, master, one-tier master and doctoral studies. The programme also offers South African students fully funded scholarships per year for three years, beginning in the 2017/18 academic year. Studies under the Hungarian Government Scholarship for South African Students will be undertaken at recognised public universities in Hungary.

Kader Asmal Fellowship Programme

The Kader Asmal Fellowship Programme invites applications for scholarships for postgraduate studies in Ireland. Please look at the eligibility criteria carefully before requesting further information and / or applying:

“This fellowship was set up in 2012 in honour of the late Professor Kader Asmal, who taught law at Trinity College Dublin for 27 years, specialising in human rights, labour, and international law. He co-founded the Irish Anti-Apartheid Movement in 1963 and served as Chair until his return to South Africa in 1990. He was part of the ANC team that negotiated the transition to democracy. In 1994, he became Minister for Water Affairs and Forestry in the first ANC Government after the advent of democracy and served as Minister for Education from 1999 to 2004. He died in June 2011.”

Eligibility:

  • South African citizen or a citizen of Zimbabwe holding a South African Permanent Residence Permit
  • Hold a Bachelors degree with a minimum average of 65%
  • Be seeking funding for a full-time postgraduate programme in one of the above listed subjects areas
  • Be able to take up fellowship in the academic year 2017/18
  • Not be in possession of a Master’s degree already
  • Intend to return to South Africa at the end of your studies
