REQUIREMENTS

:

An appropriate Bachelor’s Degree in Natural/Environmental Sciences (NQF 7) or

equivalent relevant qualification. Relevant experience of which a minimum of five

years is at a middle management/senior management level. Knowledge of and/or

experience in biodiversity planning, conservation and ecosystem management; the

management of Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought (DLDD), Climate

Change as well Biosafety and Alien Invasive Species matters. Experience in the

coordination, facilitation and implementation of Multilateral Environmental

agreements (including the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification

(UNCCD), Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, and the

Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) related programme of work). Financial

Management, People Management and Empowerment. Client orientation and

Customer focus. Programme and Project management. Strategic Capability and

Leadership skills .

DUTIES

:

Ensure efficient management of the Directorate Biodiversity Risk Management.

Provide strategic leadership, policy guidance, management, technical and scientific

support on developing and implementing tools to mitigate threats to biodiversity.

Provide strategic guidance, management, coordination, technical, scientific and

implementation support for the integrated responsive programmes to address

biodiversity threats from among others, Land-use activities, Genetically Modified

Organism, Climate Change, DLDD and alien invasive species. Provide sound

science-based risk assessment and response planning on terrestrial biodiversity.

Coordinate and manage the implementation of all activities related to the UNCCD

and act as focal point for the Convention. Render technical support to the

coordination and implementation of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs)

(Ramsar Convention, United Nations Framework Convention to Combat Climate

Change, the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species and the

Convention on Biological Diversity) including regional structures. Coordinate policy

responses to promote sustainable land management. Implement bio-safety related

legislation and provide guidance on the risk management of alien and invasive

species. Facilitate and coordinate the implementation of strategies established to

enable priority research aimed at advancing the biodiversity science policy

interface as it relates to threats to biodiversity. Provide line function support and

advice to inter-governmental and national structures including clients within the

public service, in private sector and to civil society at large. Management (as well

as performance management) of all staff in the directorate. Executing relevant

responsibilities, projects; tasks, processes and allocated budget. Administration,

training and capacity building of staff.
